American Woman Divides the Internet for Wanting to Move to Afghanistan for Husband She Met Over Snapchat

Grand gestures of love are often romanticized and become the stuff of the novels. When Alex Sunny (@alexsunnyyy) told TikTok that she would be moving to Afghanistan for her husband, her announcement went viral. But social media wasn’t celebrating—many were sending warnings to Sunny’s way, which she has seemingly brushed off.
Sunny’s initial post said that because the United States government banned all entry for Afghans, she has decided to go to her husband instead. In a later video, she confirmed that she wasn’t just visiting but “moving” to Afghanistan.
Sunny met her husband on Snapchat in July 2024. She works as a truck driver, which she said gave her leeway to converse with her husband indepth for hours on end.
“I felt like I knew him forever,” Sunny told TikTok, even though they had been in a long-distance relationship for almost two years. She described him as easy to talk to and said that she was ready to follow him, whether it be in the United States or Afghanistan.
Geography is hardly ever an issue to two people who’ve decided to spend the rest of their lives together. It isn’t uncommon for people to uproot their lives to make the big move for love. However, Sunny’s post was met with criticism online.
TikTok outraged by Sunny’s move
Social media commenters have also given their opinions on the state of women’s rights in Afghanistan beneath Sunny’s videos. She has been trending for weeks, and social media users have been sending her warnings.
One commenter in her video wrote, “Was moving together to a different country not an option?”
Another grimly wrote, “Packing boxes for things you can’t wear or use over there is actually hilarious.”
Someone else said, “Everyone saying the update in a few months will be interesting. THERE WILL BE NO UPDATE.”
Many more were asking Sunny to reconsider her decision to move. However, she has responded only by expediting her impending trip, deciding to leave two weeks earlier than planned.
The tragic state of women’s rights in Afghanistan
Currently, the Taliban, a terrorist group, controls Afghanistan. Four years since the Taliban’s takeover, the rights of women and girls in the country have significantly diminished. The United Nations reported that women in Afghanistan are being denied employment, barred from their right to education, and are unable to access services unless they have a male relative to accompany them. Women-owned businesses like salons, radio stations, and the like were also shuttered in the country.
Several reports also suggest that Afghan women are mandated by the Taliban to wear a head-to-toe burqa—appearing without one in public is prohibited. Under the dresscode, women are also not allowed to show their faces or wear makeup.
The UN further alleged in its report that in one hospital, authorities forbade the staff from providing treatment to unaccompanied female patients. It seems like a small liberty, but it’s one that Afghan women currently do not have.
What compels her to take the risk
A woman on TikTok, who claims to have worked with Afghan advocacy groups, gave her opinion on the matter. She believes that there are four possible reasons as to why Sunny would make her move despite the warnings she’s been receiving online.
The woman said that first, Sunny might think of herself highly compared to other Afghan women because she’s American. She might believe that she will be given special status compared to the locals on the basis of her passport.
Second, the woman theorized that Sunny’s husband might be a Taliban official. She referenced how the wives and daughters of Taliban officials would receive special rights and privileges that the rest of the population doesn’t have.
Third, Sunny’s videos may be a PR initiative by the Taliban. She believes it wouldn’t be a surprise, as the Taliban had once gone viral for their odd tourism skits on Instagram.
Fourthly, the situation may not be as complicated as it seems. She concluded that Sunny may be ignorant of the full context but feels a sense of security in her virality. Because the internet is aware of her whereabouts, she feels that the Taliban authorities wouldn’t just attack her.
Others on social media have also thrown out the possibility that Sunny is just engagement farming. That may as well be the best possible scenario for a woman who is eager to risk it all for a man she met on Snapchat.
