Alberta Man Checks Into an Airbnb. He Finds a Trap Door: ‘We’re Not Here to Get Murdered by Ghosts’

While hotels offer top-notch service, there are times Airbnb is simply the preferred option—whether it’s for the space or the value of money. But Munsi’s (@munsicus) Airbnb booking looked something straight out of American Horror Story.
Munsi, from Ontario, Canada, toured TikTok in an Airbnb rental called “The Big House.” Off the bat, it looked spacious. However, the layout was interesting, to say the least.
“This is the weirdly placed murder door in the kitchen,” Munsi said, panning their camera out to a strange door. It wasn’t special—it was a simple, wooden, white door. But Munsi said, “It leads to a creepy crawlspace.”
What does the crawlspace lead to? Absolutely no one knows, and many other gutsy guests would be inclined to explore. Munsi wouldn’t, because they seem to have great survival instincts.
Munsi turned around, and there was a sign that said “Big House Exit.” Anyone would take it literally and think that it must be the backdoor exit of the house. Instead, it would bring those who go through it to yet another room in the house. An interesting detail here is that the “exit” door slides closed on its own—that’s not entirely abnormal, but it’s not difficult to imagine anyone feeling surprised once they start seeing a door close on their own in a property they’re unfamiliar with.
A weird door on the floor of the sketchy Airbnb
Speaking of doors, the room that Munsi stepped into after stepping through the “exit” had a strange door on the ground. According to them, the door on the floor leads to a subterranean room—a basement, floored only by loose rocks. Munsi described the door as a “trap door”—and from the looks of it, who could blame them?
Upon discovery, Munsi and friends wasted no time and placed a heavy table on top of the door. “We are not here to get murdered by ghosts,” he explained. “That being said, if we do get murdered by ghosts, I’m open to it. Let’s stay at a haunted Airbnb!” Munsi was, of course, being sarcastic.
Although the hatch on the ground is definitely the strangest feature of the Airbnb, it’s not the only weird detail about the house. Strangely enough, there were also chairs in front of beds—one luxurious-looking chair and one metal-braced chair. While some people definitely have strange fantasies going on when they see these chairs in bedrooms, it’s hardly the ideal scenario to wake up at an odd hour of the night and see something sitting down there.
Munsci also confirmed that every room in the house had a lock on the outside part of the bedroom door. While there are legalities to consider when it comes to lock placements in the United States, there are no strict laws about locks outside of bedroom doors in Canada. Chairs, strange locks, and weird doors—it’s not difficult to see why TikTok is creeped out by this house. It’s even more surprising that Munsci and their friends chose to stay the night.
Did they survive The Big House?
Munsi said after the trip, “We had fun, we did shows, we made people happy, we avoided opening the creepy doors, and none of us were murdered by ghosts!” Needless to say, he survived, and neither ghosts nor zombies came crawling out of the basement trap door.
Does Airbnb let anyone list their property up for short-term rent? Given Munsi’s experience, it almost seems so. Unless the theme people are deliberately going after is murder mystery, Airbnb should probably be stricter with the homes they list for rent.
