The Genie in Disney's animated Aladdin.

Disney’s Aladdin Getting a Live-Action Makeover – in the Form of a Prequel

Is there any way to get Jasmine up in here?

A slew of Disney properties have gotten a live-action makeover. Some have gotten the straight-up remake treatment. Others tell the same story from the antagonist’s point of view. Now, the world of Aladdin is coming to life in a live-action feature film – in the form of a prequel titled Genies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Genies “would focus on the realm of the Genies and reveal how Aladdin’s Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp.” Of course, the long-term plan is for this to lead into an eventual live-action Aladdin movie. Genies is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, and directed by Michel Hazanavicius, who’s also directing Disney’s upcoming live-action Prince Charming movie.

Hey guys, I know a great writer (*cough*G. Willow Wilson*cough*) who’s already explored the world of the jinn beautifully for both her graphic novel Cairo and her awesome novel, Alif the Unseen. You know, if this script needs a polish.

What do you all think about this announcement? Do you have a hankering for Genie backstory?
