New, American Bleach Movie in the Works

Everyone’s favorite Soul Reapin’ manga Bleach could be making its way to the silver screen. THR’s Heat Vision blog reports that Warner Bros. is currently in the process of acquiring the rights to the epically long manga, and that Peter Segal (yes, the guy who directed Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore rom-com 50 First Dates) would be producing the movie, in collaboration with his partner Michael Ewing and with Bleach‘s English-language publisher Viz Media.

This is all very early on in the process, and there are no details about possible plotlines for the would-be Bleach movie to follow. Just as crucially: no word on whether it’d be live-action or animated. There have already been three Bleach anime movies: Memories of Nobody, DiamondDust Rebellion, and Fade to Black, I Call Your Name, all of which got theatrical releases in Japan. A live action Bleach could be pretty cool, though we shudder to think what it could look like if it was too dumbly Americanized or too smugly made in the knowledge that the fanboys will come however cheap or bad it wound up: See: Dragonball Evolution; The Legend of Chun-Li.
