Kentucky Man Tries Ordering Zaxby’s Traditional Chicken Wings, Only to Get Confused After Seeing the Prices: ‘Math Ain’t Mathing’
A 10-piece cost a penny more than a five-piece.
A Kentucky man just wanted to eat some chicken wings. Instead, he was left to run a bit of mental math to understand Zaxby’s pricing scheme. In a video that has since gained over 207,800 views on TikTok, Alex (@igobuyalex) shared with viewers his confusion over how Zaxby’s calculated their five-piece, 10-piece, and 20-piece traditional chicken wings, seemingly with no rhyme or reason.
“I’m so confused right now,” Alex said at the beginning of his video, adding that someone needed to “check on the financials guy or whoever” at the fast-food chain. Alex shared with viewers that he was in the middle of ordering some of Zaxby’s traditional chicken wings, but noticed the discrepancy in the prices instead.
“If I want 20 wings, I would pay three different prices here, okay?” Alex said. He began by pointing out the five-piece wings, which were priced at $9.99. But when it came to the 10-piece, he couldn’t help but scratch his head.

“For one penny more, you can get 10 wings,” Alex said, noting that the 10-piece is listed for only $10. However, customers can get 20 wings for triple the price at $33.29, or $1.66 per wing. “Zaxby’s, the math ain’t mathing…” Alex said in the on-screen text. This isn’t the first time a discrepancy in pricing was questioned, as one man was also confused on differing prices despite it being the same item.
Alex then questioned why he would order the 20-piece wings at $33.29, when he could just order the 10-piece wings twice for only $20 total. But at the same time, he could also order the five-piece wings four times and pay nearly $40 total. “None of this makes sense,” Alex said.
We can’t help but be a little confused as well. But according to BroBible, the pricing varies by location, as most of Zaxby’s stores are independently owned by franchise owners who account for around 90% of the locations. Because of this, the prices of their Zaxby’s products are set at their discretion.
For example, Zaxby’s at 4949 Dixie Highway in Louisville has its five-piece wings priced at $10.49, the 10-piece at $17.79, and the 20-piece at $33.99. While 921 Commerce St. in Dallas had its wings priced lower, such as $8.99 for the five-piece, $15.99 for the 10-piece, and $29.99 for the 20-piece.

Other factors for the seemingly confusing Zaxby’s chicken wing prices may also come into play. According to Hunt4Freebies, the chain also hosted a $10 for 10 chicken wings promo in honor of National Chicken Wing Day on July 29. Looking back at Alex’s post, his video was uploaded on the same day, which answered the question of why the 10-piece wings at his Zaxby’s location only cost one cent more than the five-piece.
Viewers argued that Zaxby’s pricing was intentional and that they market certain items without seemingly being blatant. “It’s called marketing. If you want wings they’re pushing you to order 10 without actually promoting it, and seeing the price of 20 to 2x 10 wings…it makes the consumer feel like they’re getting a deal for ordering the 10 wings twice when really it’s just marketing. It’s like those s***** game ads where they lose on purpose to incentivize people to download to prove they can do it better,” one viewer wrote.
Others told Alex about the promo, saying, “Promotion going on for 10 for 10 wings, normally 10 traditional wings r about 17.” Some even pointed out how different the prices have become compared to the past. “What’s crazy af About all this is back in 2005 which I know is 20 years ago but still you could buy 20 wings for 4 to 5 dollars,” a viewer said.
