Florida Man Arrested for Destroying an Arby’s Weeks After Being Released From Prison for Hunting and Killing a Swan Because He Was ‘Hungry’
A Florida man who was released from prison less than a month ago is back behind bars once again after he allegedly smashed up an Arby’s. Adonis Leyva, 34, had previously been imprisoned for hunting and killing a swan because he was “hungry.”
Leyva served just under a year (344 days) of jail time for killing the swan after he was seen carrying the bird around Lake Eola in Orlando in August last year, reports The New York Post. When he spoke to horrified witnesses who confronted him, he told them the dead swan was “my food.” He also reportedly admitted to attacking the bird when police showed up, telling the cops who showed up to arrest him, “I was hungry, so I hunted.”
The swan attack earned Leyva some notoriety in his local area. He admitted during his arrest to killing the swan and subsequently pleaded no contest to the animal cruelty charges that were brought against him. A mental competency evaluation found Leyva to be fit to face the charges, something which many in the area found concerning rather than comforting.
Speaking to News 6, local resident Elizabeth Guerrero said, “I don’t think anybody that does cruelty or has harming in their hearts should be free,” adding that, “Nobody would feel safe.” Despite concerns, Leyva was released from prison this year. It’s unclear whether he received any mental health treatment during his prison stint.
Adonis Leyva’s alleged rampage put him straight back in jail
Leyva found his freedom after serving his sentence for the swan killing to be short-lived, as he was arrested once again on Monday. This time, his alleged crime was smashing the window of an Arby’s in Orlando, frightening the female employee who was working at the establishment at the time. Levya then allegedly went next door and began smashing the Dunkin’ Donuts sign.
His alleged property damage rampage continued as the 34-year-old was also accused of throwing a pipe at cars as he walked along East Colonial Drive. He was also accused of smashing a PNC bank ATM during his spree. He only stopped when he was finally busted at a Wawa nearby.
“I’m glad everybody’s alright,” witness Kim Long, who was filling up on gas at the Wawa, told News 6, “I hope he gets the help that he needs.”
Adonis Leyva is facing two third-degree felony charges of criminal mischief. Jail records show that he is currently being held on a $6,000 bond. Meanwhile, the Arby’s that Leyva is accused of smashing up is “no longer open,” according to a police report.
