Eating out is already expensive, so most customers probably check the menu before ordering. But even when the price looks reasonable, small extras can make the final bill higher than expected.
That can be annoying when the extra is something simple. Paying more for cheese or sauce might make sense, but some customers may not expect to pay just to have their food toasted.
That is what surprised Los Angeles TikToker @shyrayel_ after a recent trip to a sandwich shop. Her large sandwich was listed at $11.99, but her total came to $14.82. When she asked why, she claims she learned that getting the sandwich toasted cost an extra $1.50.

In the video, the woman explains that she initially expected tax to push the $11.99 price higher. Still, $14.82 seemed like enough of a jump that she asked an employee about it. That’s when she claims she learned that getting the sandwich toasted cost an additional $1.50. “A dollar fifty?” she responds. “A dollar and fifty cents to get something toasted?”
For her, the issue wasn’t just the extra money. She explains that she could have taken the sandwich home and toasted it herself if she had known beforehand that the shop charged for it. “If I would have known that, I would have did that shit at home,” she says. “A dollar 50 to get something toasted is crazy to me.”
The sandwich price and the $1.50 toasting charge alone do not account for the full $14.82 total. The woman mentions tax in the video but doesn’t provide a complete breakdown of everything included in the final amount. Customers have been questioning the price of small restaurant extras lately, especially when a $4.50 cheese upcharge can cost nearly as much as part of the meal itself.
The Los Angeles customer didn’t go quite that far, but she still questioned whether the charge made sense. She asks viewers whether she is overreacting or the sandwich shop is. The reaction in the comments suggests plenty of people understood why the charge bothered her. “I would’ve told them to untoast it now we both look crazy,” one viewer joked.
Others couldn’t get past what the $1.50 was actually paying for. “$1.50 for heat,” one person wrote. Another asked, “$1.50 for some heat?!” A third simply called it a “Toasting fee?”
Some viewers said the extra charge would have been enough for them to leave without the sandwich. “I literally would of left the sandwich,” one person commented. Someone else agreed, writing, “They woulda held onto the sandwich…I might be hungry…but it’s the principle.” Toasting isn’t the only seemingly small extra that can cost more than expected. Customers have also been surprised by what restaurants charge for sauce.
For Shyrayel, however, paying an extra $1.50 just to have a sandwich toasted was enough to make her question how normal these small charges have become. For her, it raised a bigger question about whether the “economy is wicked.” “I don’t know if this is just an LA thing or the economy is beyond f*cked up right now,” she says.
The $1.50 charge may seem small, but it was enough to make plenty of viewers question where these extra costs end. For many, the bigger issue was not knowing about the fee before ordering. And if toasting costs extra, customers may start asking what else isn’t included in the menu price.
