Residents of California Community Condemn Mail Carrier Who Abused the Neighborhood Peacock

Neighbors in the community reacted to the shocking behavior of a postal worker, who allegedly attacked Sugar the peacock. ABC News reports that the bird was attacked with liquid, stones, and some sort of club or stick by the mail courier. Witness Gina Davis claimed that she and her husband found Sugar injured and disoriented, with a swollen eye; the bird was also unable to move its wings.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Davis told local news outlet KABC, “I know that the peacock … likes to follow the mailman, but at that time, if you look at the video, he wasn’t bothering him.” Davis described witnessing Sugar being hit with the club, telling the news outlet it was “horrible.”

Sugar the Peacock was well loved

According to Davis, the bird “has been in our neighborhood for several years and has gotten to know everybody.” Some neighbors have apparently even taken to feeding the bird his favorite blackberries. In addition to upsetting the local community, the alleged attack on Sugar also sparked outrage online.

“That bird is a local icon, this is completely uncalled for and heartbreaking to hear.” One comment on X reads. Another person said the incident was “absolutely infuriating,” while a third called for action against the mail carrier: “Lock his a– up and fire his b—h a–.”

However, not everyone was so quick to condemn the mail carrier, with some reports suggesting that the peacock had been aggressive in the past. Some even questioned whether Sugar had attacked the person first: “If the mail carrier snapped, maybe the peacock had been aggressive toward them for weeks. Why assume the carrier is the sole aggressor?”

Sugar is in recovery

Following the alleged attack, Sugar was taken into the Pasadena Humane Wildlife Center for care. Veterinarians confirmed that the peacock had suffered several minor injuries but that nothing had been broken. “Overall, his prognosis is good, we plan to keep monitoring him over the next several days,” public relations and communications director at Pasadena Humane Wildlife Center, Kevin McManus, told ABC News.

Meanwhile, the United States Postal Service stated that it is currently reviewing the incident, gathering facts, and determining next steps. A statement from the Postal Service said that postal workers had had previous encounters with peacocks and that it had been working with Pasadena Humane regarding the bird.

The Pasadena Humane Animal Control has been looking into the incident too and has requested Ring camera footage from locals in the neighborhood to assist in the investigation.
