Chris Brown Loses a Major Court Battle Over a $13 Million Dog Attack Settlement, Putting His Usher Tour Paycheck at Risk

Another win for Avila.

Chris Brown just took a major hit in court, and it’s putting his Usher tour paycheck in serious jeopardy. According to TMZ, a Los Angeles judge ruled that his former housekeeper, Maria Avila, can collect a portion of his tour earnings to satisfy the $13 million judgment she won in her dog attack lawsuit. The decision means a direct cut of the cash Brown pulls in from his R&B tour with Usher will now go straight to Avila, whether he likes it or not.

The ruling came after Avila filed a request to assign some of Brown’s royalties and tour income toward the judgment. Brown’s legal team fought back hard, arguing the move was too broad and the $13 million payout was excessive. But the judge wasn’t having it. Court documents show the objection was dismissed, and the collection order was signed off without hesitation.

If Brown wants to challenge this, he’ll need to file for reconsideration or take the fight to an appeals court. For now, though, Avila has the green light to start collecting.

The legal battle stems from a 2020 incident at Brown’s Los Angeles home

Avila claims that back then she was viciously attacked by Hades, a Caucasian Shepherd guard dog. She suffered serious injuries, including facial trauma, arm damage, vision loss, and nerve damage.

Avila’s lawsuit painted a grim picture of the aftermath. She alleged that when Brown saw her bleeding profusely, he didn’t call emergency services himself but instead told his team to handle it. The jury sided with her after a two-week trial, slapping Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, with a $12.9 million damages bill.

The case didn’t just involve Avila. Her sister Patricia, who worked with her on the property and held her bleeding body after the attack, was awarded $885,000 for extreme emotional distress. Avila’s husband, Oscar Olivo, also received $50,000 for loss of consortium, after testifying that his wife’s physical and psychological trauma destroyed their marital intimacy. The jury’s decision wasn’t just about the attack itself but the ripple effects it had on Avila’s entire family.

Brown’s legal team has been fighting the verdict tooth and nail

The Blast reports that on August 10, they filed a motion demanding a brand-new trial with a fresh set of jurors, arguing the $13 million sum is wildly excessive and can’t be justified by the medical evidence. The appeal hinges on a controversial moment during cross-examination when Brown’s 2009 assault on Rihanna was brought up.

His lawyers had pushed for a total ban on mentioning the incident, insisting it had no bearing on the dog attack case. They called the question “inherently inflammatory” and claimed it unfairly swayed the jury’s decision.

The defense also alleges that critical evidence was hidden from the jury. They claim Brown’s head of security secretly gave financial assistance to Avila’s family right after the attack, but Avila denied receiving any money under oath. Brown’s team insists she’s lying, and the jury was never given the full picture. Whether these arguments will hold up in court remains to be seen, but for now, the judgment stands – and Avila is poised to collect.

This isn’t Brown’s only legal headache

He’s also entangled in a criminal case in London, where he’s accused of a violent nightclub altercation with his vocal coach, Omololu Akinolu. Prosecutors allege the two attacked a music producer in a VIP section, with Brown striking the victim over the head with a tequila bottle and continuing the assault as the man fled.

After ignoring multiple lawsuits, Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel and forced to post bail. He eventually pleaded guilty to a charge of affray, dodging more severe charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. The plea deal means he’s still facing up to three years in prison, with the judge warning that jail time remains on the table.

Back in Los Angeles, Brown’s mansion has become a hotspot for security issues. Last month, a woman broke into his home around 5:55 pm, and police arrested her for trespassing. In a separate incident, a man jumped the fence and tried to start a fire. He was arrested, released, and then returned to the scene hours later, only to be arrested again. That same month, Brown made headlines when his security guard allegedly fired a CO2-style weapon in an argument with a woman.

The Usher tour has been a bright spot for Brown, drawing massive crowds

However, with Avila now cleared to collect a portion of his earnings, the financial hit could be significant. Fans have been buzzing about the tour’s success, but some speculate the timing of the additional dates might be strategic, per Hot New HipHop. Brown’s legal team could be looking to generate as much income as possible before the judgment takes a bigger bite out of his earnings.

Brown’s legal team has a few options moving forward. They could push for a new trial, appeal the judgment, or challenge the collection order. Each path comes with its own risks and uncertainties. A new trial would mean reliving the entire ordeal, while an appeal could drag the process out for months or even years. Challenging the collection order might buy some time, but with the judge already dismissing their objections, the odds aren’t in their favor.

For Avila, the ruling is a major victory. After years of legal battles and physical recovery, she’s finally in a position to collect what she’s owed. The $13 million judgment was meant to compensate for the pain, suffering, and long-term trauma she endured. Now, with the court’s backing, she can start reclaiming that money directly from Brown’s tour earnings. It’s a rare win in a case that’s been anything but easy.
