Indoor Cat Owner Says His Landlord Visited His Apartment to Fix Leak, Then Sees His Balcony Door Wide Open: ‘Can’t Believe This is Happening’

Coming home to a wide open door is a nightmare for indoor cat owners.

Man Says His Landlord Visited His Apartment to Fix Leak While He Was Away, Then Sees His Balcony Door Open

TikToker Felipe (@whyfelipewhy) says someone else’s mistake almost cost him his beloved pet cats. In a recent TikTok video, he said his landlord came to his apartment while he was at work to fix a leaking ceiling but left the balcony door open.

Felipe said his landlord came to his apartment around 11 a.m., and he returned from work around 6 p.m., meaning the door was open for at least 7 hours. He said that he instantly panicked upon entering the apartment and started looking for his cats after closing the balcony door.

He said that he found his girl cat, Miki, after searching for a while but couldn’t find his boy cat, Moki. “And I’m, like, looking over my balcony, like, where the f–k did he go? I’m like, I can’t believe this is happening. I’m like, like, literally could not believe it. Like, I felt sick to my. Sick to my stomach. I’ve never felt like this before,” Felipe said. Thankfully, though, Felipe said that the boy cat allegedly came from under his bed, allowing Felipe to take a “sigh of relief.”

“Why did he leave your balcony door open?”

Felipe said he had lost his boy cat earlier, too, when he was a kitten. “When I lost him when he was, like, three months old in my apartment building. But this is different because he was, like, in my apartment building when I first, like, when I lost him when he was a kitten,” he said.

PSA: be home when your landlord goes to your apartment to fix anything ESPECIALLY if you have pets at home. my cats literally could have easily escaped and been killed in the busy streets of nyc …. #cats #catescape #nyccats

Some people in the comments section of Felipe’s post expressed anger over his landlord’s behavior. One user wrote, “That is the absolute worst fear for any indoor cat owner. why did he leave your balcony door open? like whaaaaat?! I’m glad they didn’t escape.” Another commented, saying “You need to make an absolutely big deal about it. Call them over and over and over. Call housing authority and see what you dan do. Do not let this go.”

A few others offered suggestions to avoid similar situations in the future. One user mentioned, “I have 2 cats also, and WHENEVER any maintenance needs to be done, I take the day off to ensure my cats don’t fall victim to someone’s stupidity.” Another remarked, “next time be home when your landlord comes to fix things. I never go out when the landlord come over to fix things I make sure I am home.”

Felipe’s situation is not unique. Other cases show how landlord actions can cause stress, including this woman who involved authorities after her landlord declined to renew her lease.

He gave an update on his cats in a separate video

A lot of people asked Felipe how his cats were doing after the stressful situation, so in a follow-up video he let everyone know that they were doing well. He introduced Moki, his boy cat that had gone missing before he eventually found him, and Miki, his girl cat. He even revealed their full names: Mikayla Aniela Gomez (girl cat) and Moquito Junior Gomez (boy cat).

Pets are like family members, so Felipe’s reaction is totally understandable after nearly losing his. Many people, much like him, would do anything for their pets.
