Server Calls Out 2-Cent Tip. Woman Admits It Was a Mistake, Then Leaves Without Tipping: ‘Why Didn’t You Just Tell Me?’

There was no reason for her to raise her hopes like that.

It’s truly disappointing when someone raises your hopes and then crushes them, something Hannah (@hannah__lynn16) can now attest to. In a TikTok video, she said she served a table of three women during her shift two nights ago. She said that their bill came to around $93 dollars, and the woman who was paying said she’d pay through her card on the Ziosk and would tip her in cash.

Hannah stated, “She said to me, she was like, I’m going to pay for the check on the Ziosk and use my card, but I want to tip you in cash. Is that okay?” She said when she went to print out the cheque to see what the woman had tipped, she noticed that the amount was only two cents.

Hannah apparently thought the woman had mistakenly entered two cents and assumed she had meant $20, so she went up to her and asked her about it.

Hannah said the woman admitted to making a mistake and asked her to break a hundred-dollar bill. She said she gave the woman the money and left for a few seconds to allow her to do her thing and then came back only to realize that she had left with her friends and there was no money on the table.

“She didn’t want her friends to know she was being cheap”

Hannah noted that the woman’s behavior was weird, especially since she repeatedly gave her the impression that she was keen on tipping her more than she did, like the man who left $5 after seeming to tip triple digits. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Just tell me that you meant to tip two cents.”

People in the comments section of Hannah’s post reacted strongly to her situation, with some suggesting that the woman wanted to save face in front of her friends. One user wrote, “She didn’t want her friends to know what kind of person she really is… Sorry this happened to you.” Another said, “She didn’t want her friends to know she was being cheap.”

Some people working in the hospitality industry also weighed in on the matter. One user commented, saying, “honestly as a bartender i rather get zero then 2 cents that’s just a slap in the face and she went out of her way not once but twice… im so sorry !” Another user stated, “WHY do non tippers always make a point to tell you they’re going to tip. What is the point, it’s so infuriating.”

Tipping isn’t legally required in the United States, but it’s generally expected as there’s an unspoken social pressure for diners to tip. That said, it’s unusual for a server to explicitly demand it, unlike in the case of the woman who claimed her server compelled her to tip through the tablet.

A Reddit thread explores this topic in great detail, focusing on the reasons behind the tipping expectations. One user wrote, “Here in America, we have built our country in a way that the most impoverished among us stand the least amount of chance at climbing their way out of said poverty. Therefore, we pay our waiters and waitresses less than minimum wage in order to create a false sense of incentive to provide excellent service and make up for the disparity.”

Another individual commented, “Wait staff are paid almost nothing because there is an expectation of tips. If you dont tip, it’s as if they did the work for free. You could pay the bill and leave, but you’re just taking advantage of someone who really needs the money.”
