Nurse Says She Was Finishing Her Two-Week Notice, Then the Hospital Told Her to Pack Her Bags and Leave Mid-Shift: ‘I Just Got Fired’
She had one week left of her notice.

While handing in a two-week notice can sometimes take different forms, ultimately, the employee is expected to continue working during their remaining time with the business. But for one employee, she claimed she was fired while in the middle of completing her last two weeks. Nurse Asiah (@asiah.mcghee) shared a TikTok video, saying, “I just got fired from my job,” and recalled the moment she was unexpectedly dismissed.
According to Asiah, in a video that has since garnered over 374,100 views, she had submitted her two-week notice when her boss kept “pestering, talking to me crazy, [and] pulling me into their office.” During these talks, Asiah claimed that her boss would mention her use of TikTok during work hours “as an excuse.”
“Mind you, I’m not saying that I was actually doing it. But they were using that as an example when proving other things,” Asiah said. The constant mention of Asiah’s TikTok supposedly made the nurse question its relevance in their discussions.
Nurse was suddenly fired
Despite the issues Asiah was allegedly facing with her boss, the Tennessee-based nurse said she arrived for work at 6am and spent the morning of her shift at a nursing home “working” and “slaving” away. But around 10:15am, Asiah claimed that she was approached by management and was told to retrieve her belongings as she was released from her notice period.
“They come up to me and tell me that I need to grab my bags because they’re accepting my two-week notice early,” Asiah said. “[My] two-week notice doesn’t end for a whole other week. So, I still had two paychecks that I had to get to before my two-week notice came.”
According to Asiah, she had contacted HR to ask for an explanation for the dismissal. Asiah said that HR denied the claim that they fired the nurse for any reason, but instead, just accepted her two-week notice earlier than planned.
“I don’t know about ya’ll, but it kinda sounded like a bit of upsetness or jealousy. The fact that I’ve even put in my two-week notice, ya’ll are mad about that,” Asiah said. The nurse claimed that the incident left her confused and hurt, as this was the first time she was fired from a job since working at age 14.
“I’ve never been fired from a job, I’ve never been let go from a job, I’ve never had a bad standing at any job that I’ve ever worked at,” the nurse claimed. A similar incident occurred when a woman was suddenly let go from her company due to a TikTok video, although it was not recorded during working hours.
You can be let go despite the notice
Commenters expressed their support for the nurse, and even shared some advise on how on possible ways she can go about the issue. “If they fired you after you put your notice in that can be considered retaliation (if you can prove it),” one commenter said. “File unemployment. If they let you go before the date you gave on your notice, that’s considered a termination. They will be made to pay you for the remaining time,” another said. Several commenters also advised others to never hand in their two-week notice, as companies don’t extend the same courtesy when terminating an employee.
But can companies fire an employee after being given a two-week notice? According to Lawyers for Justice, a two-week notice is not a legal requirement, but a form of courtesy. Most states in the U.S. are “at-will,” where either the employer or the employee can end the employment at any time, as long as the termination is not due to unlawful reasons.
In particular, no notice is needed to end employment. But if notice was given, the employer can decide whether to honor the resignation date stated by the employee or accept the resignation immediately. Employers are also not required to pay the employee for the supposed remaining days if they decide to terminate employment before the employee’s last day, unless stated otherwise in the union rule, contract, or company policy.
Despite the termination, Asiah seems to be keeping a positive outlook for the future. “God has a plan for me. Something better will come along the way,” she said, and shared that she has several interviews already lined up following the incident.
