Female Guest Wears White to a Wedding. Then the Maid of Honor Gets Revenge. But Did She Go Too Far?: ‘I Did My Duty’

Most women understand that if you attend a wedding, wearing white is a no-go. Nowadays, especially, you don’t even have to guess. The couple often gives instructions about the style and/or colors they’re going for.

And if you do happen to wear white to a wedding where the couple didn’t explicitly ask you to do so, many believe someone in the wedding party should interfere in some way.

In a now-deleted TikTok video that went viral with over 11.4 million views, one maid of honor decided to confront such a guest.

She did so by pouring a red liquid all over her white dress “accidentally.” Viewers deemed the move controversial.

In the clip, two women seem to casually walk past the guest in the white dress, who is sitting down at a table. Suddenly, one of them pours the liquid on her dress while pretending that it was an accident.

The guest appears to have been pregnant, and most commenters assumed the liquid was red wine, which is why some thought the move went a step too far.

“When you wear white to a wedding! #redwined,” TikTok creator Petunia (@petuniaaztec), who posted the video, wrote in the clip’s text overlay.

The concept isn’t unheard of, either. There are many stories online about maids of honor or bridesmaids spilling red wine on an unwanted white dress, asking the guest to change, or even telling them to leave.

Viewers Were Split

An overwhelming number of viewers thought the maid of honor was in the right. However, others thought ruining someone’s night, especially a pregnant guest’s, was unnecessary.

“Should’ve just asked her to leave politely. She’s pregnant. Grown women acting like that is crazy,” one commenter wrote.

Another viewer argued that avoiding white doesn’t have to require buying an entirely new outfit. “I couldn’t afford to buy a new dress for a wedding. I had a white dress that fit me well so I bought a $3 bottle of fabric dye and dyed it pink,” they wrote. “It really is that simple.”

Some commenters thought the response was part of the maid of honor job description.

“I hope yall know the whole point of a maid of honor typically is to throw wine on whoever shows up wearing white,” one person wrote.

Others, however, wondered whether the guest simply didn’t have many options. “What if that was only dress the fit her,” another viewer asked.

The Maid of Honor Speaks Out

The woman who poured the drink identified herself as the bride’s daughter in the comments.

“Sooo I’m the girl who poured the drink as my MOMS maid of honor I did my duty,” she wrote. “It’s a simple rule but if you want a story time I have the time to explain never been a mean girl yall.”

She later posted two videos to her own TikTok account, @kushbabyalexx, explaining both her reasoning and some additional backstory.

In the first part, she clarified that she wasn’t the only maid of honor. Her mother had two: her and the other woman dressed in black who appears in the viral clip. She also said the wedding colors were black and red, which made the guest in white stand out even more.

She also said she had already decided before the incident that anyone who showed up in white could expect to end up with red on their outfit.

However, despite what many viewers assumed, she says she didn’t actually use wine.

“I did forget the wine, so what was in the cup was actually cranberry juice,” she said.

Then, in part two, she revealed that she only learned the guest’s identity after the fact, and said knowing beforehand probably would have made her reaction worse.

According to the maid of honor, the woman had previously worked with her mother and later married one of her mother’s former bosses, who had received an invitation to the wedding.

“Even if my mom and her didn’t have problems anymore, I do feel like it was deliberate,” she said.

As for the fact that the guest appeared to be pregnant, she didn’t think that changed the situation.

“You’re pregnant. Okay, that’s fine,” she said. “But you could have chose a different color.”
