Arizona Woman Gets Married and Changes Her Last Name. Then Realizes Her Honeymoon Is in Jeopardy
This one detail could completely derail your honeymoon dreams. So don't do it.

Getting married already comes with plenty of paperwork. Changing a last name can add another problem, especially when a honeymoon is coming up. For newlyweds flying soon after their wedding, a honeymoon flight can come with unexpected problems if you change your name so the name on the flight reservation doesn’t match your new ID.
TikTok creator Emma Joy (@emmajoytrca) ran into this exact problem after changing her last name. She warned other newlyweds about the issue, although many viewers thought there was a much easier way to avoid it.
“Just know that when you get married, and you go to the airport, you’re gonna need to bring an entire bag of your documents known to your name,” Emma says in the video. She lists a marriage license, passport, Social Security information, and both new and old IDs among the documents she believed she needed to have with her.
That’s when she realized there was a catch
“Because they might not let you on the plane just because you got married and you have a new last name,” she adds. Emma then turns to her husband for his take on the situation. He does not hesitate, calling it “stupid.”
The trip did ultimately go ahead, but her warning has caught viewers’ attention. The video has received more than 265,800 views. However, changing a last name after marriage does not automatically mean every traveler needs to bring all of the documents Emma listed.
Many viewers thought Emma could have avoided much of the stress by waiting to make the legal change or booking the flight under the name shown on the identification she planned to use. “We booked our flights in my maiden name, and we aren’t changing our names until after we get back for this reason,” one person commented.
“Girl just wait till after the honeymoon so much unnecessary stress,” another wrote. Others thought matching the booking to an existing ID was enough. “Or just book your flight with the name that’s on your id,” one viewer suggested.
Another commenter was dealing with a different problem after already changing their name. “My name is changed to my new name but I don’t have my hard copy new id and they don’t accept paper,” they wrote.
What to do and why
For couples planning to travel shortly after their wedding, the comments point to one thing worth checking before making a name change: which name appears on the travel document and flight reservation. Changing a last name does not automatically update an existing flight booking.
For U.S. airport security, the main issue is verifying a traveler’s identity. TSA requires adults to show acceptable identification, and those whose identity cannot be confirmed may not be allowed through security.
The rules are tied in part to TSA’s Secure Flight program, which uses a traveler’s full name, date of birth, and gender for security and watchlist screening. The program moved that responsibility from airlines to the federal government.
Secure Flight was fully implemented for passengers flying domestically and internationally on U.S. airlines in June 2010. The program followed a 9/11 Commission recommendation and has TSA check passengers against government watchlists before a boarding pass is issued.
For travelers who have recently married, matching the name on their reservation with their ID can help avoid problems. This means that getting married or changing a last name does not by itself require someone to carry every document Emma listed.
There is another ID requirement travelers now have to consider. Since May 7, 2025, TSA no longer accepts non-REAL ID-compliant state-issued IDs at checkpoints as standard identification. Travelers can instead present another acceptable form of ID, including a U.S. passport.
A temporary driver’s license is also not on TSA’s list of acceptable identification. That could matter for someone who recently changed their name and is still waiting for a replacement physical license.
