Woman Says a Creator Filmed Her Boyfriend Without Consent and Uploaded the Video, Then She Went Ahead and Used Her ‘power’: ‘I’m Crazy’

Secretly taking videos of people at the gym, no matter who they are is not cool and should be challenged, just like @supasamega (real name not revealed) did. In a TikTok video, she said that while scrolling through her “For You” page, she came across a video of a woman (a creator) at her gym suggesting people try to find their partner there.

@supasamega said the video showed the woman filming about 13 men from a distance without their consent, including @supasamega’s boyfriend. @supasamega then took matters into her own hands and used her “power” to kick her out of the gym. Not only that, but she also made sure she was banned from all the gym’s branches.

@supasamega shared her overall thoughts on the incident in her video. She pointed out that when women face this kind of treatment, people tend to call them out. She argued that if the man was a victim of creeps, he should be supported as well. “My thing is why would we be holding men accountable as women for being creeps but then not follow the exact same thing?”

“Can we just normalize not videoing people without their consent?”

@supasamega’s story is relevant because unauthorized filming with devices is a hot buttom topic due to new tech like Meta glasses. Some have misused them, including an incident in which a Texas woman claimed an Austin man secretly filmed her using them.

@supasamega confronted the woman filming her boyfriend and other men in her gym, saying that she was making them uncomfortable in their “safe space” by filming them. “My first thought would be maybe these men have girlfriends, you know, but the most logical thought would be maybe these complete strangers don’t want to be recorded by a stranger and posted online in their safe space where they’re trying to better themselves in the middle of their set,” she said.

People in the comments section of @supasamega’s seemed to agree. One user said, “Aside from the fact that it was somebody that was in a relationship can we just normalize not videoing people without their consent? Like it’s weird truly.” Another mentioned, “I hate how social media has normalized filming strangers without their consent. Thank you for actually doing something!”

A few others on the other hand, did not think that the woman recording was in the wrong. One user commented, “No sorry your action was weird. She honestly may not have thought about not showing people.” Another user stated, “A gym is not a “Safe Space” it’s a public space. Meaning you are in public. People are allowed to record in public without your consent. Everyone should learn this instead of thinking you have to give consent.”

Is it appropriate to film yourself at the gym with others in the background?

A Reddit thread from 5 years ago tries to answer this question. The person who started the conversation said they didn’t think it was appropriate to film yourself at the gym with other people in the background without their permission. The commenters, on the other hand, had differing opinions.

One wrote, “If you’re in public there’s no reasonable expectation of privacy.” Another said, “I agree! I was in a f–king proposal video on Valentine’s Day as I was doing low rows. I was extremely embarrassed and uncomfortable. The videographer didn’t even ask me to move or ask my permission to be in the video. People are s–ty.”

While @supasamega’s boyfriend appeared in the background of the video, a woman from Florida was being directly filmed by a man wearing Meta glasses, prompting her to share her experience online.
