Texas Roadhouse Server Gets Her First Big Party. She’s Doing Her Greet When She Realizes Something About All 14 of Them: ‘So It Was Rough’

A job in customer service is notoriously difficult. Servers have to deal with so much, from politely catering to rude customers to working long, irregular hours. It was Mckenzie’s (@mckenzie58821) first time working at Texas Roadhouse, and she recalled her worst customer experience as a server. Ironically, it wasn’t because the customers were rude.
“I had my first big party. It was a party of fourteen,” Mckenzie told TikTok. What makes larger parties difficult to manage is that at times, they might even split the bill. When they couldn’t agree how to pay like this woman who had dinner with her friends in Miami, it could add more stress to servers who have to deal with the breakdown of the bill. At times, they might even intervene with how the bill is split.
“They come in and sit down. I give them my greeting, and I ask everybody what they want to drink, and they’re all looking at each other confused and just staring at me.” Was there something on Mckenzie’s shirt? Did she say something offensive to them? Were they just ignoring her because she wasn’t the server they wanted?
Customers can get out of hand, and it wouldn’t be surprising for some to be completely unreasonable. One server even recalled waiting on a rude man who asked her to send the food back to the kitchen for no clear reason.
But Mckenzie’s case is unique. The customers were not rude at all.
“It turns out they were all completely deaf. All fourteen of them. So, it was rough,” Mckenzie revealed. It’s unclear if she knew standard American Sign Language, but if she did, there’s no better time to use it than at that moment. But in one comment, Mckenzie said she just pointed, typed, and smiled her way through the situation.
TikTok users share their equally awkward server moments
Regardless, the clear communication barrier seemed unforgettably awkward for Mckenzie.
Mckenzie’s clip went viral on TikTok, with many users dumbfounded by the situation. One commenter said, “Literally the last thing I expected.” To this, Mckenzie jokingly replied that she didn’t expect it to come either.
Meanwhile, another TikTok user said, “As a server fluent in ASL (certified) this is my dream.” It seems that one person’s dream scenario is another’s nightmare.
But other servers also started recalling their awkward moments with customers who have special conditions.
One commenter shared that she had a similar situation with Mckenzie. There were ten people who booked a reservation at their restaurant. But unlike Mckenzie, she was aware that she was going to serve a table that needed special attention. She expressed that informing the host of any special requests should be standard practice for customers so that everyone can avoid an awkward or unpleasant dining experience.
But another social media user had done something slightly worse during her time as a server. She was standing by the POS, and a child came around the corner of the cabinet. She enthusiastically greeted, “Hi, little guy!” Then, she found out that the customer was not a kid. If that “kid” had been a certain short comedian, the verbal assassination would’ve been brutal.
But when Mckenzie was asked how the table tipped her, she simply replied that it was an “Mbappe special.” It may have been awkward, but she presumably scored a huge tip from the experience.
