A Drag Performer Walked into a Wedding Filled with American Flags. The Theme was 9/11: ‘Never Forget.’

Themes set the tone for parties, and weddings are no exception. Sweet Pickles (@bitethesepickles), a Los Angeles-based drag performer, is used to performing at all kinds of parties. But there was one wedding she couldn’t forget – because it was themed after 9/11.
Sweet Pickles told Instagram that she was accidentally hired to be a wedding reception entertainer for the event. She explained that every September, she and her fellow drag queens would do an out-of-town gig where they would do a Friday night dance party followed by a drag brunch the next day at a “camp” resort.
As they were approaching the venue for their dance party, they were told by the employees that there was an ongoing wedding reception. The staff also informed the wedding party that there would be drag queens coming over, and they were thrilled and welcomed them to perform.
Weird wedding decor
As they were approaching the venue, Sweet Pickles noticed that some of the decor seemed unusual for the wedding.
“For one, there are a lot of American flags everywhere,” she said as she recalled the entrance of the venue. Then, she noticed a big fireman’s helmet right in front of the table next to the guest book.
But then she looked at the banner on the wall. It read, “Never forget.”
“And then I realized what day it is,” the flabbergasted Sweet Pickles said, it was September 11th.
“These people have not only chosen to have their wedding on 9/11, but they have also themed their wedding—the decor of their wedding—to be 9/11,” she confirmed.
9/11 is not a theme most people would think of for a wedding. Although Patriot Day is not designated as a federal holiday, there are often commemorative activities done to remember the victims of the fateful event.
Why did they choose 9/11?
Despite the bizarre theme, Sweet Pickles and her crew of drag queens went in. The party was already in full swing, and they started chatting with the bride and groom. She asked them the burning question—how did they agree to use 9/11 as their wedding motif?
“Walk me through this thought process,” Sweet Pickles said, still perplexed that a wedding would take inspiration from a tragedy.
“And they told me two things. Number one is that the bride always wanted a September wedding. And two, the groom is a fireman. All his groomsmen are firemen,” the drag queen explained. These were the reasons given to her by the couple, and 9/11 seemed to be the perfect way to incorporate the elements together.
“Yeah, and it’s perfect because this way, we’ll always remember our wedding anniversary,” the groom allegedly said.
“You know, never forget,” Sweet Pickles added.
Even the DJ played into the bit
But the wedding celebration wouldn’t end without a bang. The DJ came up on stage and announced that the dance floor is still open.
Ironically, the DJ played Fire Burning by Sean Kingston to hype the crowd up. It’s an upbeat song, but perhaps not the most tasteful choice given the decor. Despite the sensitivity of the subject, many social media users were amused by the couple’s odd theme. Some even managed to joke about it.
One commenter even asked, “Did they have two cakes?”
Another person joked, “So how did you guys…. Land on this one?”
Someone else said, “That’s the worst day for firefighters ever, and this guy is just living it up.”
It seems that some people could still make light of even the worst of situations.
