Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s Best Comedy Is Making a Comeback
Korean Jesus, dangerous new drugs, and a whole lot of laughs: over a decade on from the sequel, a third installment of the 21 Jump Street franchise is finally in the works.
As per Variety, the long-awaited follow up to 22 Jump Street is inching ever closer to production, with stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in talks to reprise their roles as undercover cops/odd-couple Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt. Ice Cube is also set to return as their boss, the no-nonsense Captain Dickson.
Producer Neal H Moritz shared a post on Instagram with the script for the project, which will be titled 24 Jump Street.
The choice was made to skip 23 as a title for a number of reasons, but mostly it’s further proof of the series keeping its irreverent tone. First and foremost, as shown in the image from Mortiz’s post, the script says “it took so long we had to skip one.” Fans of the reboot and its sequel will also recall that 22 Jump Street ended with a series of vignettes showing Schmidt and Jenko taking on a number of other undercover roles, ranging from pretending to be priests in training to wannabe dancers and firefighters, and that these technically serve as number 23 in the series.
While this is all very exciting news, fans shouldn’t get too ahead of themselves. So far, only Tatum is confirmed to be signed onto the project, although given Hill wrote the script, it is deeply unlikely he will be missing. There is also no current release window, which means no chance to count down the days until we get to see the devastatingly hilarious duo back on our screens.
The film series is a reboot of an eighties television show of the same name, which starred Johnny Depp. The original was a straight-faced drama, so while it definitely inspired the movies, fans looking for the same dose of laughs until the new film is released should look elsewhere.
