Alaska Woman’s Father Worked Beneath a Base. She Meets a Man Who Had the Same Mysterious Job: ‘They Sound Human When They’re Far Away’

There’s no doubt that working a job underground is fraught with danger. Miners had always been worried about either being buried underground or poisoned by gasses. But a woman who lives in Alaska told Ashlee (@ashleeinc) about her father’s strange underground job. While he wasn’t a miner, what he’s seen underground has often left him shutting down in silence.
Ashlee prefaced the story by talking about a conspiracy theory about the Alaskan Dark Pyramid. The theory suggests that the areas in between Alaskan provinces, Anchorage, Barrow, and Juneau, have an underground dark pyramid beneath them. They’re supposedly linked to secret government experiments and aliens, but archaeologists have denied these claims.
Ashlee says that the story is from a woman named Kayleigh, whose father was a government contractor who worked underneath a base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Kayleigh said that back then, her father often made comments about the underground levels at the base where he worked. He used to repair electrical systems for remote den sites.
Her father’s strange habits
Kayleigh noticed that there were times her father would disappear for stretches at a time without calling his family. Whenever he returned home after working for long periods, he would look exhausted. She recalled her father would be skittish around sudden noises and that he was often unable to sleep unless the windows had blackout curtains. Strangely enough, he also hated tunnels—which hardly makes sense for a man who spends most of his time underground.
When she was eleven years old, Kayleigh recalled going into a parking garage that was underground. Unexpectedly, her father pulled the truck over and started having a panic attack. He then made a comment about there being “places underneath this country that people were never supposed to dig.” Her father did not elaborate further on it.
This was her father’s usual response. Kayleigh says that he would say something outlandish, freeze, and refuse to elaborate.
Nevertheless, when she got older, she noticed that her father wore uniforms without a clear logo of his company. His ID badge also didn’t sport the logo, just his name and a barcode. Sometime later, her father returned with two perfectly straight surgical lines on both of his arms.
But among his other strange habits was checking for vents wherever he and his family went. Clearly, the man seemed to be claustrophobic.
What’s beneath Alaska?
Sometime before his death, he finally spilled some details about the underground—which he claimed were not officially documented on paper.
Kayleigh asked if it had to do with bunkers, but he said it was “way further down.” These were not bunkers, as they went “miles down.”
She recalled him saying, “The elevators that go miles down have armed guards inside of them.” There were guards both inside and outside the elevators. He claimed that after a certain depth, nobody was allowed to travel on their own. During maintenance shifts, he said they would also hear animalistic noises that involve scratching and breathing—these were not machines.
“Whatever is around there, they built walls around it instead of removing it,” he told her. When she asked him what “it” was, he shut down once again. He refused to speak about the tunnels in depth after the conversation.
Her father would pass away without him telling more about what he’d seen. Kayleigh eventually did her own research and then found out about the conspiracy theory. She dismissed it as such until she started bartending near Anchorage—the same city that’s part of the supposed pyramid.
Unexplained noises
She was working late at a bar during a snowstorm. It was nearly closing time when a man in his late fifties walked in looking completely exhausted. Kayleigh has seen this look before—it’s the same one her father wore back in the day.
After he ordered bourbon, the man chatted Kayleigh up, and they talked about work.
He asked her why she’s still open so late, and she responded that they’re about to close. Kayleigh joked that at least she’s not stuck working underground somewhere. At the mention of that joke, the man froze. He asked her about how she knew about the underground, to which she told him about her father’s experience as a contractor.
He just stared at her and asked Kayleigh, “Did your dad ever mention the medical wing?” She remembered a story her father told her when she was sixteen about a sealed level underground. There were people working there with respirators, and whenever the alarm went off, the elevators sealed automatically.
The man claimed that he “just got out” of the lower levels. He even said they aren’t allowed to wear watches underground because “time doesn’t behave normally.”
And then, he mentioned the strange noises at the vents underground—the same ones her father didn’t elaborate on all those years ago. When she asked him who or what is causing these noises, he laughed.
“I don’t know, but they sound human when they’re far away.” She almost dropped the glass she was holding.
The man got up to pay for his one drink, but before leaving, he asked Kayleigh if she knew why there were armed guards in the elevator. He told her, “It wasn’t to keep people out.”
A Men in Black Situation
Whatever is underground isn’t something authorities want anyone to know about. A few days after the strange encounter with the man, her bar manager called her. He asked her if there was a strange guy who went to the bar, which she confirmed. The manager told her there were two men from the military searching for the man, asking if she discussed anything classified with him.
She told them the truth, and about a week later, her apartment was broken into. Boxes that contained her father’s things were rummaged through, and yet nothing was missing. To this day, it’s unclear what resides in those lower levels—and perhaps it’s best never to know.
