Kids describe mom and dad’s jobs — they’re not what anyone would expect

These children have gone viral on TikTok for answering one question: what’s your parent’s job? It’s not unusual for kids to have an exaggerated view of the world, but these kids gave social media weird impressions upon describing their parents’ jobs.
Take Oakley, for instance—one of the children in a TikTok interview by Kayleen Nickell (@kaynickell). Oakley believes his dad works in the garden. Is he a landscaper? A gardener? Maybe a farmer?
“I’m Oakley’s dad, and I work in finance for the US Air Force.” This job certainly has nothing to do with trimming bushes and mowing the lawn.
Another child, Hudson, was asked where his father works. Hudson said, “in a tractor.”
The answer leaves a lot to possibility—he could also be working at a farm or operating lifts.
Jarod, Hudson’s father, said something nobody expected. He said, “I’m an aircraft mechanic.” He’s not working in a tractor—he’s working on planes and a bunch of other machines.
Children confuse TikTok on their parents’ jobs
“She does selling metal,” brothers Roy and Yobani said of their mother. One of them continues, “They also have these gas tanks.” Is their mother a mechanic? Maybe she’s in the precious metals trade?
For anyone who guessed either of those two, it’s wrong. Their mother said, “I am in accounting.” Social media users were confused, stuck in between wanting to believe the kids and doubting the parents. One commenter wrote, “Accounting? They said you sell metal.”
Another commenter wrote, “Metal to accounting threw me all the way off!” What do gas tanks and metal have to do with accounting, a popular desk job? TikTok is confused.
The descriptions don’t get any better. Another child from a different video said his mother “works all day” and eats “gummy bears and snakes.” Are the snakes made of gummy too? Or should the internet assume that she’s an exotic food connoisseur?
His mother replied, “I work for Schneider Electric, and I am a sales engineer.” The internet almost thought her mother either loved candy a bit too much or had exotic taste in food.
Either way, it’s clear that these kids have a warped and incomplete description of their parents’ jobs.
Big imaginations, limited vocabulary for description
And in a separate clip by Channie (@channiesllc), one child said, “He does house,” regarding her father’s occupation. He revealed that he works in real estate, which doesn’t miss the mark on his daughter’s description.
Another child, Chloe, also said her father “works outside with the cows.” She might not know the term, but she wasn’t wrong either. Chloe’s father works as a stockyard employee.
These kids aren’t lying about their parents’ jobs. They’re not intentionally being funny either—they just don’t have the words to describe what their parents do for a living. Also, these kids are just pointing out what they’ve observed.
Many of these kids have also responded to the question by saying that their parents stay at home to care for them. Being a stay-at-home parent is a job in itself, but in most cases, the parents aren’t solely doing that. It goes to show that most of these children are going by description, not what their parents actually do for a living. Besides, most eight-year-olds wouldn’t know what accounting is until the government starts hounding them for taxes.
