Server comes out of bathroom to customer giving her a dirty look—who humiliates her by asking an invasive question: ‘This is actually my worst fear’

A server calls her friend after an awkward run-in with a customer in the bathroom. Her friend tells customers they need to have better boundaries with servers after hearing what she asked her.
In a video with over 33,000 views, TikToker Chelsey Starr (@chelsey_starr) gets off the phone with her friend, who is a server at her old job. Starr says her friend was distraught after a woman confronted her as she walked out of a bathroom stall.
“There’s a customer right outside the stall. She looks at [my friend] and goes, ‘Did you just sh–?'” Starr recounts. “I could never imagine a stranger walking out of the stall and asking them if they sh–.”
She continues that her friend told the woman it wasn’t “any of her business” and quickly left the bathroom. Then, she sees the woman sitting in her section.
“She gets her section buddy to take the table because [expletive] that,” she says. “Could you imagine? ‘Hey me again. I know you just accused me of sh–ing on the clock but here’s our specials.'”
How do servers handle awkward conversations?
On the r/ServerLife subreddit, other restaurant workers suggest uncomfortable questions are a common occurrence. Many question why customers feel comfortable starting awkward conversations with them, sharing their own experiences.
“I was getting along great with this family of four. Towards the end the mom asked if she could ask me a ‘weird question.’ She asked, ‘So do you think they are siblings or dating?’ (talking about her kids),” one server shares. “These two looked MORTIFIED.”
A second says, “It was awkward for me because I was asked by 3 separate people if I was pregnant. I wasnt and never have been. Just fat!”
Some servers set boundaries
In the comments of Starr’s viral TikTok, other servers share how they would have responded to the situation.
A commenter remarks, “The way I would say yep and walk right out the door to the nearest handwashing sink in the kitchen.”
“The way I’d turn round and say yeah f yeah I did and what,” a second says.
Some say they’ve had their own weird run-ins with customers in the bathroom.
“Was actually taking a sh– and someone asked me when I was done if I could bring a ranch to their table,” one says.
Another writes, “I have had customers make a complaint about me using the toilet and sh–ing on the clock (small town Nebraska for ya).”
“I had a table once ask me for a water while in the restroom,” a third adds.
