Woman working at Starbucks gets third-degree burns from pouring hot americano, wears tank tops to cover them, but then develops cysts

For someone working in the food industry, injuries are quite common, especially if they frequently work around fire, handle hot beverages or food, or deal with sharp objects. While that is true, it’s also true that no one goes into their job expecting to have an accident; therefore, whenever one occurs, no matter how obvious, it’s always shocking to the person involved.

Two days ago, @goomba732 uploaded a video to her TikTok where she talked about how five years ago she got burned at Starbucks. She explains that it was not a minor burn but a third-degree one, covering a large area from her neck down to her solar plexus. The culprit? Well, it was a coffee. Not just any coffee, though, a venti Hot Americano.

TikTok user @goomba732 suffered third-degree burns while working at Starbucks

As she stated in her TikTok video @goomba732 two days ago, five years ago, Emi suffered burns while working at Starbucks. Emi recalls that it was a Friday, and she was having a good time at work and planning to go to Brooklyn. Then, ten minutes before her shift was about to be over, she prepared the last coffee order of the day: a venti hot Americano, which she described as about “two hundred degrees.” Emi mentions that the lobby was busy with people, so much so that there was a fifteen-minute wait for drinks. After she prepared, cupped, and covered the drink, she extended her hand to hand it over to the customer, but unfortunately, her co-worker, who was standing nearby, also turned at the same time Emi did. The two collided, causing the hot Americano Emi was carrying to spill everywhere.

Emi recalls not feeling anything at first, but feeling annoyed that her white shirt was stained with coffee. However, when she went to the bathroom, she gradually started to “feel hot.” Later, when she went back to change her clothes after excusing herself from work, she really started to feel the “heat.” Worse, a pendant she was wearing was slowly embedding into her skin, so much so that she had to remove it. As the burning sensation grew stronger, Emi decided to pour water over herself, but a co-worker warned her against it, stating her body could go into shock. When asked to look at her injuries, the co-worker was shocked and told Emi to go to the hospital. Emi recalls that although she felt the heat of the burn, adrenaline masked her pain. She remembers changing into a shirt after removing her old clothes, and that the shirt was getting stuck to her so badly she had to peel it off. The moment Emi realized how serious the situation was, as she mentioned in her video, was when she went to the restroom, lifted her shirt, and saw the injury, she described it as looking like melted plastic. She screamed at the sight and decided to go to the nearby hospital, but refused an ambulance because they would charge a lot for a short trip. She eventually arrived at the hospital but had to wait between two and four hours before receiving care. The doctor told Emi she would be given Percocet, ointment would be applied to the area, and the wound would be gauzed. Before she could take the medication, Emi’s father asked if she had eaten, and she replied no. He argued with the hospital staff, who then brought Emi a mayo sandwich and a blueberry muffin. Emi took the Percocet, and her pain subsided almost completely. She was then ointmented and bandaged and went home. Throughout that summer, Emi says she wore halter tops that covered the burn area. She also mentions that her doctor advised her to apply moisturizer to the burn, which she did. Unfortunately, however, because she was wearing halter tops, the moisturizer trapped under her skin, leading her to develop cysts.

How long can it take for a third-degree burn to heal?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, in the case of a third-degree burn, the top layer of the skin, called the epidermis, is damaged. The middle layer, known as the dermis, and the layer of fat beneath the skin, called the hypodermis, are also injured. A third-degree burn can sometimes damage sweat glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings.

The healing time for a third-degree burn varies depending on the affected area. While smaller third-degree burns may take at least three weeks to heal, larger ones can take up to a couple of years to fully recover.
