NYC woman ecstatic at finding Jacquemus wedding dress—if only everyone didn’t think it was hideous: ‘Looks like something you could get at Zara’

A New York City woman went out with her friend and saw her pick out a perfect wedding dress from Jacquemus. Then, she posted about it, and commenters picked the wedding dress apart bit by bit.
Fashion influencer and TikToker Gal Matza (@nycfashiongal) went out with a friend to Soho’s Jacquemus boutique. There, her friend found a flowing white dress that she loved for her wedding.
Matza congratulated her friend, writing, “crying” in her TikTok’s description because she was there to see it. Within days, though, the TikTok garnered millions of views, with 2.7 million people watching the post in less than a week.
Viewers, as it turns out, were not happy about the dress. They mentioned that it looked cheap and urged Matza’s friend to reconsider it. However, others defended the pick, saying that Matza’s friend may just opt for a non-traditional wedding or something that looks slightly different than others’ expectations.
What is Jacquemus?
Jacquemus is an “independent fashion house” located in Paris, France. The company’s founder and leading designer, Simon Porte Jacquemus, created the brand at the age of 19 after dropping out of fashion school. After years of development, Jacquemus is now considered one of the most iconic fashion hubs in the country and is considered ahead of the game when it comes to digital marketing and “social media hype.”
Pieces from the fashion house range in price, but they often come with price tags in the thousands. In New York, there’s one brick-and-mortar location that Matza’s friend presumably found her dress in—the building, which is nestled in Soho, is one of two locations in the United States.
Why do commenters hate the dress so much?
Commenters’ main criticisms of the Jaquemus dress were that it was neither “regal” nor “bridal” enough for an actual wedding. Some commenters, too, said that it looked cheap—the material it was made of was thin. The tassels and ornaments on the dress didn’t look strongly attached. Plus, the dress that Matza’s friend picked out was summery and somewhat sheer.
Many commenters joked that it could be mistaken for a night gown rather than a wedding dress. That reads as unflattering. A few tried to downplay the situation, suggesting it was a “bridal afterparty.” Others, however, outright rejected it for any bridal occasion.
“My swimsuit cover-up?” one viewer joked.
While some weddings are casual enough to allow guests to wear summery beach dresses and occasional rompers, there are a number of publications that recommend avoiding clothing that looks like sleepwear or is too sheer.
Other viewers, though, argued that Matza’s friend picked out something she liked. She wasn’t selecting her wedding dress for the internet’s specific approval, nor did she even have them in mind when she did.
“Everyone saying ‘just bought it for the brand’ or ‘that’s not a wedding dress’…. You dont know what kind of wedding she wants??? It might be a very tropical beach wedding, not everyone wants a sleeved princess gown,” a commenter wrote.
Still, most commenters had jokes about the dress, not flattering compliments. One TikToker even humorously questioned whether or not the purchase was a “recession indicator” because of just how bad they thought it was.
