Hawaii military girlfriend says she’s not allowed at events because she’s not a wife. Then viewers start connecting the dots: ‘He’s hiding you’

Being a military wife, partner, or even girlfriend can be tough. From moves across the country at a moment’s notice to isolation within insular communities and a lack of partnership during key life developments, it can break even the strongest people.
One woman has a different set of problems entirely related to her military boyfriend, though. TikToker @motob660 posted a video saying that she was having a hard time with her boyfriend’s military involvement. It wasn’t because he was halfway across the country or in a completely different country. It was because she was reportedly not invited to military celebrations due to her “girlfriend status.”
In her video, which now has over 993,000 views, she wrote, “Weird phase. always the odd one out.” Commenters then broke the news that she had no reason to get left out of the celebrations she wasn’t invited to. According to them, she should be looking at her boyfriend a little more closely, as he may be cheating.
Why wasn’t she invited to military event?
Generally, benefits and status in the military are tied to dependent status. By not being married, there are certain limitations that the TikToker would have. Many legal programs, support systems, and community events are specifically limited to military members and those with dependent status. That does mean that she wouldn’t have access to them.
However, community groups aren’t the same as military celebrations. As many commenters pointed out, it’s unusual not to get invited to other celebrations where family can generally attend. Most of the time, those in the military can generally bring spouses and partners to promotions. Family and friends can usually attend.
It’s unclear whether this specific promotion is a more private and formal occasion. There are instances where officers limit promotion attendance. Although, based on the general viewer response, it seems uncommon.
She argues her point
While many commenters were urging the creator to reconsider her relationship, she ended up revealing an essential piece of information about her post—the event that she was missing didn’t allow wives or family members to attend at all. It was exclusive to military members, at least according to her partner.
When one commenter said, “That’s not a thing. He’s hiding you,” the TikToker replied, saying, “Go look at my other comments, his command said ‘no wives and girlfriends or significant others at this promotion.’ It was strictly for them.”
This exasperated multiple viewers, who still argued that Motob660 should be allowed at the promotion and that there was something off about the way her boyfriend was discussing the information with her.
“My husband recently retired and everyone was always invited to promotions. There was only ONE instance I encountered when my friend (the wife) was not invited by the husband lol. He also said no wives/girlfriends allowed. Wives and girlfriends and family members were totally allowed… He just didnt want his wife there,” one commenter said.
Another commenter said, “Listen to the comments. Everyone is invited. I’m a military spouse, and I have met girlfriends, parents, children, and even aunts and uncles. I’m not the active duty, and my parents have attend a family command function because of my husband.”
Motob660 did not seemingly take commenter concerns seriously, later saying that the post was “rage bait,” and that people were too sensitive about it.
