Who Is Fox McCloud? The ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Just Added an Unexpected Character.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie just got a bit more smashing. On Thursday, Illumination and Universal Pictures officially confirmed that Fox McCloud, the protagonist of Nintendo’s Star Fox video game series, will play a role in the upcoming film. While a voice actor has not been announced yet, a character poster reveals the first full look at the character (situated next to a pretty adorable-looking monkey).

Eagle-eyed fans had previously speculated that Fox McCloud could be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, after part of his shoulder was spotted next to Yoshi in one of the film’s trailers. At the time, some had joked that an actual cameo from the character would be too good to be true… but now, here we are.
A skilled pilot and the leader of the Star Fox team, Fox McCloud first debuted in the 1993 game Star Fox, which got a slew of sequels including Star Fox 2 in 2017. In a modern context, he has been best known for his involvement in the Super Smash Bros. games, having been a playable character on every roster since the original 1999 game. While a Smash Bros. crossover movie has yet to be confirmed, fans have been hoping to see it culminate to that point onscreen since the first Mario movie. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie already teased more Smash Bros. ties through a Pikmin, so between that and Fox’s involvement in the film, anything is possible.
But the important question is: who is voicing Fox McCloud? The new voice cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been nothing short of a pleasant surprise, including Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and most recently Donald Glover as Yoshi. There’s a chance that Fox’s voice actor could be another genuinely galaxy-brain casting choice… one that hasn’t even remotely occurred to fans yet.
What Is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie About?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. The film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score. The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Brie Larson as Rosalina.
“There’s profound things in this movie,” Larson recently told the Seen on the Screen podcast. “That’s part of what excites me about it. The person who’s going to see some indie arthouse film is not necessarily the same person that’s going to think to go see an animated movie. Sometimes there’s overlap. But it doesn’t mean that we don’t all need these same messages. I just think it’s a wonderful thing. If you can make a movie that’s for families to enjoy in the theater together that’s really for anyone, and it has a universal message with beloved characters? I mean, come on!”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released exclusively in theaters on Wednesday, April 1st.
