‘1000% you did the right thing’: Miami woman goes on first date. Then something doesn’t sit right—so she goes to the police

A Miami woman went on a first date. Then, something felt so off that she reported the situation to a police station the very next day. Nothing necessarily happened that was violent, but she made a choice to document the encounter because she genuinely felt that she would be at risk if she didn’t.
TikTok content creator Kayla Morán, a 28-year-old and creator economy lawyer, emphasized that other women should do the same as a precaution if they feel deeply unsafe on a date.
“If something feels wrong. Listen to it,” she said. “Call a friend, call your mom, call your siblings and stay safe out there.”
Her video describing the situation received 3,200 views, with many commenters inquiring what exactly happened on the date that made her feel so genuinely terrified. Morán, however, did not clarify. She only added in her original video that the man may have threatened her during the date. Then, she discussed safety tips, including documenting and making reports of concerning encounters.
Morán’s description of events
Morán went on a late-night date with a man. While she didn’t clarify what exactly happened, she did say that she went to the police station to let them know some “weird behaviors” that were happening during the evening.
“From the moment that we met… on the date, something felt off last night and it didn’t get any better,” Morán said. “I was trying to… give the benefit of the doubt.” Morán also clarified there was never a point in the evening when she felt safe.
She also mentioned a detail about the date: The man may have threatened her and told her she could call the cops if she really wanted to afterward. As Morán described, “ It’s not the first time I’ve had a man, I don’t even wanna call him a man, like a boy threaten[ed] me with calling the cops because of whatever their, whatever’s going on in their mind, and it’s part of their games.”
After the date, Morán felt so unnerved that she discussed her situation with family and friends. They recommended that she trust her gut. So, she went to the police the very next morning to make a statement.
While she wasn’t pursuing any criminal charges, Morán said the report would help her approach the situation with an abundance of caution. That way, in case the man did try to continue speaking to her, she already had evidence that something was off.
Morán’s safety tips for other women
In her video, she described a few safety tips, including the advice that women should do background checks on their dates before going out with them. This, along with keeping location on and having an exit strategy, can help with unsafe feeling encounters, even if they’re in public spaces.
It’s also best in general to keep dates to areas that can be easily left. It’s significantly easier to leave when a first date is at a coffee shop or a restaurant. In contrast, a first date on a hike would be much harder to exit.
Morán reflected on the situation, saying, “ I’m glad I know self-defense and I’m glad I’m very vigilant and aware and I can play aloof and dumb to protect myself.”
In a later update, she mentioned that she was feeling OK after making the report and trying to get herself ready for a long workday. She was thankful to everyone who reached out with concerns or comments since her initial post.
