‘They make me feel like it’s such an inconvenience’: Honolulu woman goes to Coach. Then she gets custom hangtags—and a weird feeling from the workers

A Honolulu Coach customer had a slightly weird experience after she asked for employees to make her hangtags. According to her, sales associates at the location were “weird” about making them, which left her posting online about the experience.
TikToker Andie Lee (@andie.lee123) said that it was “not ANY hate at all” to the Coach sales associate who worked with her. But she noticed a strange vibe when she asked for custom hangtags in her local store.
It was difficult for her to ask for exactly what she wanted, and with limited Coach stores, she was having trouble getting cute hangtags.
“Just see cute hangtags and I want to participate and no stores that do the fun ones will ship to Hawaii,” she said. “That’s all.” Ultimately, she ended up with at least one design that wasn’t exactly what she was imagining. Commenters chimed in and gave her advice for next time on how to get exactly what she’s looking for.
What are Coach hangtags?
One of the most underrated perks of buying a Coach product is that they have optional, monogrammable tags. The company typically sells its hangtags as an add-on for other purchases.
Coach states that customers can “customize this Add-On Monogram Hangtag instead of the original hangtag on your purchased handbag and enjoy the flexibility to return the bag.”
Coach customers love the options and variety offered by these custom tags. Reviewers online even state that, “No other brand does this! They are so fun and add a personalized touch.”
For many, it’s a rite of passage with any new Coach purchase to customize the hangtags. And, many Coach stores allow customers to create “elaborate designs.”
Some commenters shared their own custom tags, which showed off just how creative the designs can be. Some had bees scattered across the entire design. One customer even managed to get a custom design of a dinosaur holding a set of heart-shaped balloons.
What’s the issue with Lee’s Coach handtag?
In contrast to some of the elaborate designs commenters shared, Lee’s designs seemed practical. But, for at least one of the hangtags she recently purchased, she didn’t end up with what she envisioned.
Lee shared that her local store in Hawaii only put a few of the designs she wanted for one of her tags, but fulfilled more of what she was looking for on another. Despite wanting “shakas” all over her first tag, she ended up with only two displayed on it. In contrast to her banana tag, which had bananas all over the back, it seemed somewhat sparse.
She mentioned that she had a hard time telling the employees what she wanted in-store, which was why she felt she didn’t get the design she wanted. Ultimately, she concluded her video by asking if anyone else had a similar experience.
Commenters share how Coach hangtags are made
Commenters had quite a bit of advice for Lee when it came to getting hangtags. For one, they urged her not to take it too hard and to be mindful of the sales associates.
“I get it. Not every store has someone who’s certified in Coach create though,” said one commenter. “Most of my staff knows how to monogram initials or symbols, but there’s only 4 people including myself who do freestyle hangtags, and between the four of us, only one of us is there per day. It’s a lot more time consuming than it looks. So if someone wants three hangtags monogrammed at once, for every other client that wants a monogram after that, we just get so backed up.”
Another added that “Coach stores are starting to move away from allowing elaborate designs because there’s been too much inconsistency from one store to another. Since not every location can execute them the same way, they’re shifting to simple monograms to keep everything uniform and avoid that issue.”
Viewers also emphasized that many stores don’t have the allotted time to dedicate to creating designs anymore. For those reasons, they emphasized that trying other locations or giving associates some time to work with the hangtags is essential.
The biggest tip for Coach lovers? Give stores the opportunity to work with a hangtag for longer and try to find stores that are willing to do elaborate designs. That way, they’re more likely to fulfill your Coach dreams.
