Waking up to mystery caffeine in your own refrigerator is not part of any balanced breakfast. One California mom was just about to grab a Red Bull before a school drop-off run when she noticed something odd. What’s a Starbucks iced coffee doing in her fridge?

Cue the spiral: her husband swears it’s not his, the kids are clueless, and suddenly the internet is drafting true-crime theories. An update brings a plot twist to the story, but viewers are still suspicious. Because apparently, nothing says “something shady is going on” quite like unexplained Starbucks in your fridge.

‘I’m Freaking Out’

Veronica’s (@dlwifey) clip has the internet donning their detective hats. With over 120,000 views, almost 400 fresh sleuths have left a comment under the video. Veronica sets the scene of her story. It’s a school morning and she’s got all her kids dressed and waiting in the car to be taken to school.

Before she leaves, she decides to pop back in the house to fetch a Red Bull, but as she opens the fridge, something else grabs her attention. There’s a grande iced coffee sitting inside, and Veronica makes sure to note that it still has ice in it. She texts her husband, and he says he has “no idea.” Even more, she calls her crazy and asks her if she sleptwalked to Starbucks.

Veronica checks her bank account and no, she didn’t sleepwalk to the coffee chain. She asks her kids, and they have no clue either. She then includes a short clip of the coffee in the fridge, saying the label was ripped off. The cup is full as if just bought, and one can see the ice still in it. There’s a drawing made with black Sharpie, looking akin to a stick figure.

“What is that picture on there? And you can tell there was a label on there at one point and it was ripped off,” she says. “So, who the hell was in my house?”

‘Genuinely Scared’

Veronica continues her story and says they even checked the garage opening history. Since she and her husband both only use the garage to go in and out of the house, they both have an app to access it. She says she doesn’t even have a house key. The app has a time log and shows who opens the garage and once they check, no log can coincide with the time.

As she concludes the story, she shares how at a loss she feels. The last thing she mentions is the fact that they’ve been watching the procedural true-crime documentary The First 48, which hasn’t helped quell their nerves at all.

Viewers Have a Suspect

Most naturally, the husband is mentioned multiple times. The most common theory is an affair. “Sounds like the side piece put her coffee in the fridge to save it and forgot,” speculates one viewer.

Another claims, “Your husband is not telling the truth I’d be demanding some answers.” One calls out the husband’s reaction. “’Did you sleep walk and go to Starbucks’ Sir, please,” says one viewer.

Another amateur sleuth says, “Nahhh. Hubs not being worried and blaming it on you sleep walking and going to starbs?? My man woulda immediately banned me from going into the house and rushed home to check every inch of the house…. AND THE LABEL BEING RIPPED OFF?!”

One viewer says, “Is this the equivalent of leaving an earring in his car to prove she was there ? But instead it’s a drink in your fridge.”

There have been viral stories where a person would catch their partner cheating based on some items left in their house or car. For example, the time a woman found a Louis Vuitton purse in her boyfriend’s car.

The Update

In a video many were waiting for, Veronica finally finds out the truth. She starts by reiterating how frightened the situation had them and that she even came close to calling the police. Before that, her husband came up with an idea.

They called their oldest kid’s school and questioned her about the coffee. In the end, Veronica says she “owned up to it.” Apparently, she had made the coffee and put it in the fridge.

“She lied. I don’t know why she lied, don’t know why she decided to give us all a scare.” Veronica then mentions that she’s still stumped regarding the Starbucks cup. She has no idea where her kid could have gotten it. However, she sounds relieved and says there was no one in the house. She thanks the viewers for “being concerned with me.”

Viewers say no

Others are not as easily satisfied with the answer. One viewer says, “Nope nope nope. It’s not adding up.”

“Check her phone to see if dad told her to tell you that,” says another. Similarly, one viewer speculates, “Dad got her to lie so he wouldn’t be discovered.”

“Who makes a coffee to put in fridge though lol,” asks another.

Another sleuth is still on the case. “But did we check to see if the ice inside the cup matched the ice from the freezer? If so, 100% let it go. If not, there’s more to the story than someone’s telling. But then why would you make it with ice and put it in the fridge when the ice was just going to melt and dilute the coffee anyways. Did she maybe DoorDash it?”

Maybe the story is not as shut as Veronica might think. The Mary Sue reached out to her via email for comment.
