‘Please tell me it’s her own wedding’: Florida wedding guest orders dress online. Uh, does she have beef with the bride?

Some are calling it a fashion faux pas, while others name it a full bridal coup. A Floridian mom videos her daughter unboxing a dress they ordered online to attend a wedding. Except, when the tiny box explodes into a floor-length, beaded, feathered mermaid gown, the internet collectively squints. The question now is: is she attending the wedding… or auditioning to replace the bride? TikTok viewers have taken it upon themselves to open the floor for a debate in the comments section.

Is it White?

Nothing gets a crowd of viewers like a good wedding attire debate. Paula’s (@paula_robert_fl) clip is direct proof. Her two-minute TikTok has attracted 840,000 views and more than 2,000 comments. She begins the clip by showing her daughter with a small box.

She says they have been waiting for three weeks to receive the dress they ordered online for Bella (the daughter) to wear to the wedding. They exclaim over the size of the box, Paula asking, “Is this an eight by ten? This is crazy!” They look hesitant, but nonetheless, Bella opens up the box.

Surprising them both, Bella pulls out a plastic bag and it unfolds into a long gown. Paula says, “I don’t know how that fit in there,” and suggests that Bella try it on.

The camera cuts to Bella wearing the dress, and this is where viewers can get a full glimpse of the gown. The color and design immediately catch the eye. It is off-white with a mermaid-style bodice and beads sewn in. The skirt tapers into a flare of feathers just below the knees, and the bottom hem swishes on the floor.

“It looks amazing…This website was a 10 out of 10.” Bella agrees.

The Viewers Say… Anything but Amazing

Paula and Bella might have been chuffed, but the viewers think otherwise. As usual, sarcastic comments are not held back. “Is this a Vegas wedding?” asks one viewer. Another says, “Do you have beef with the bride?” A third asks, “Are you getting married on Sesame Street?” One even says, “Is this for a pole dancer?”

Others choose to state their opinions straightforwardly instead. One says, “This is a wedding dress? For real? Man, times have changed and I wasn’t notified.”

Another viewer says, “May this level of guest at my wedding never find me Dear Jesus…..”

“Not for a wedding U can never upstage the bride Its pretty tho,” says another viewer.

One comment that pops up the most: Is she the bride?

While some viewers cross their fingers and hope the answer is “yes”, Paula breaks the bubble with a resounding “no.”

What Colors Should You Avoid Wearing as a Wedding Guest?

Wearing white at a wedding immediately raises eyebrows, but some people are completely unaware of such a rule. Aside from the conventional rule, The Knot got a wedding dress designer to chime in with her opinions on the subject.

According to her, one shouldn’t wear anything “white, cream, or ivory.” She also mentions avoiding an outfit that could “upstage” the bride. This means anything from color to style or grandiosity. Simply, the bride’s gown is the one that should catch all the attention, not the guests’.

As frequent as this debate occurs, you’d be surprised to learn how many people still dig in their heels and still choose something white or showy for the guest attire. Interestingly enough, it’s more popular concerning mother-in-laws. The Mary Sue once covered a story where the bride’s future mother-in-law bought a gown similar to Bella’s. In a similar story, one mother-in-law bought the dress and when the bride refused to let her wear it to the ceremony, she doubled down that it was “pink, not white.”
