So Sinners Was Almost Not the Only Vampire Movie in the Awards Conversation This Year

Marty Supreme could have ended so differently. Director Josh Safdie joined the A24 podcast to discuss a weird vampire conclusion to Timothée Chalament’s new movie. And it is surprising!

His character would have left off in the 1980s if things had gone a little different. It’s wild to listen to Safdie tell Sean Baker about this tonal whiplash that was the plan a long time ago. Kevin O’Leary plays Mr. Wonderful in Marty Supreme. But, he would have taken a bit out of our title character if the director would have pursued this frankly mystifying direction.

“His family grows, he leaves the city, has this beautiful house, and it ends with him at a concert for Tears for Fears with his granddaughter. They’re great seats, up front, and he’s watching it,” he said. “And he’s thinking about ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World,’ and youth, and what does it mean, and he has this success, but he’s not doing the thing that he believed he was born on the planet to do.”

“You’re on his eyes, we built the prosthetic for Timmy and everything, and Mr. Wonderful shows up behind him and takes a bite out of his neck, and that was the last thing in the movie,” Safdie smirked.

Marty Supreme and Sinners continue their weird mirroring moments

So apparently, Chalamet was supposed to be in his advanced years at the end. This makes sense as Marty Supreme takes place firmly in the past. But, while at a concert with his daughter, Mr. Wonderful comes in for the fateful bite. Can you imagine what audiences would have had to say walking out of the theater? It’s almost enough to make you wish it had actually happened. But, from the looks of award season and Rotten Tomatoes, people like Marty Supreme just the way it is!

After this story got out into the larger media landscape, folks couldn’t help but mention Ryan Coogler’s Sinners again. It’s not hard to see why. Michael B Jordan’s starring role battling against the vampires, and then becoming one would have only made this strange coincidence even more stark. They really can’t escape each other. And, it’s not clear if they really want to as Chalamet’s strange Critics Choice Awards speech continues to somehow have legs after more than a week. (To be as fair as I can to the young actor, he looked really nervous up there.)

If this isn’t the wildest thing, O’Leary previously told Variety that he had the chompers made, and that means this thing got pretty far down the line.  It’s pretty bizarre, And fascinating. But, it seems like we landed on the right ending without the vampire homages playing a role.
