With the holidays approaching, people are searching for the perfect gift for their loved ones. For some, gift cards can be a great present. If you browse the gift card rack carefully, you may find a few that offer multiple options. Although they may appear to be a win-win for everyone, one server issued a public service announcement warning that they could create more problems.

How do these gift cards cause more issues?

“Hey, quick PSA from a server. When you’re gonna buy a gift card for your family member, and you’re like, ‘I’m gonna get one of those gift cards that’s got 20 different things on it,’” Knoxville-based server Sav Pierce (@savkaypierce) tells over 109,000 viewers, unveiling a $25 One4All Ultimate gift card. “Please don’t.” Then, she explains her reason for this.

“Because they bring this gift card into the restuarant, and there’s five steps they need to take in order to turn this gift card into a gift card for the restaurant they want to take it to,” the content creator elaborates. “And it’s not very clear. So, 99 times out of 100 that someone shows up with one of these, I end up having to go take it in the back and do it on own cell phone.”

By taking it upon herself to activate the card, it eats up time in her shift. “It takes 10 minutes of my time because the 99-year-old woman you gave that gift card to does not know how to do it,” Pierce says.

“So, just pick an actual gift card for them instead of doing whatever this is, ’cause it’s a pain in the [expletive],” she concludes.

What did viewers think of the server’s PSA?

In addition to Pierce’s customers, many in the comments section weren’t aware of this.

“Omg no the amount of times i left it on the table and left!!!!!” one viewer commented.

“Thank you for this! I had no idea. Your job is hard enough, I dont want to add to it!” another stated.

“I had no idea! I have a few of those and was so irritated that none of them [worked]. That explains a lot,” a third said.

On the other hand, those who knew about these gift cards had just as much contempt as the content creator.

“I hate receiving those gift cards. They’re so annoying,” one commenter wrote.

“These are terrible and so much work [for] the gift giver. Its even worse for the elderly,” a second remarked.

How to use these gift cards

Typically, a normal One4All gift card works like a credit card. The first step is to verify sufficient funds by checking the gift card balance on the website or by calling the number on the back of the card. Then, a single swipe should cover the amount. However, some work entirely differently. When the bottom reads ‘online exchange required,’ it’s essentially an eGiftcard. Because these are usually available at Kroger’s, the realer lists instructions the recipient has to take before using it:

  • First, visit the website on the back of your card
  • Next, select the restaurant or retailer you want to use
  • Check your email for an eGift card for that establishment

Before grabbing that gift card, ensure it includes ‘enter payment like credit’ at the bottom.
