Following in the footsteps of shows like The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and Andor, Disney Plus’s collaboration with Lucasfilm continues with their latest series, Tales of the Jedi, which is now streaming in its entirety. The series—spearheaded by Clone Wars boss Dave Filioni—explores six unique anthology stories that chronicle young Jedis living in the prequel trilogy era, and features returning franchise favorites like Ahsoka Tano, Mace Windu, and Qui-Gon Jinn.
Though many fans are excited to dive into the new series, Star Wars is a franchise riddled with extended universe lore, retellings of past events, and contradicting narratives—which may cause some confusion as to where Tales of the Jedi fits in the rest of the Star Wars universe and chronology. In recent years, there’s been significant discussion over which Star Wars media (outside of the main franchise films) are considered canon, and Tales is no exception. So, with yet another new piece of Star Wars media to explore, the question remains—is Tales of the Jedi canon?
The short answer: Yes! Though it may be moving across multiple timelines and jumping between characters (it is, after all, an anthology) Tales of the Jedi‘s narratives can all be considered canon, and fit in with the rest of the existing Star Wars films and lore. Though the series may be exploring characters in a way we’ve never seen before, it can be understood as backstory/in-depth exploration of their history (particularly in the cases of Ahsoka and Count Dooku) as opposed to rewrites of their characters.
It’s worth noting, though, that there is an existing Star Wars media called Tales of the Jedi that isn’t canon—which certainly makes discussions more confusing. Though we’re talking about Tales of the Jedi the Disney Plus animated anthology series, there’s also a 90s comic run called Tales of the Jedi which isn’t canon. The comic book series was published by Dark Horse between 1993 and 1998, and though they share a title, the Tales of the Jedi comics aren’t significantly related to the series, and aren’t canon to the larger franchise.
