ewan mcgregor looking good as obi-wan kenobi

Let’s All Scream-Cry Over the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Teaser

Finally, the wait is over. After 17 years, we have our first look into Ewan McGregor’s return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new teaser trailer for his solo series from Disney+, and what an emotional journey for fans of the prequels and McGregor’s take on the Jedi. In the new teaser, we get an idea of what is happening in the world of Obi-Wan and where the series will take us—mainly that Darth Vader wants the Jedi gone and the Grand Inquisitor (played by Rupert Friend) is sending Inquisitor Reva (Moses Ingram) after Obi-Wan.

Disney released a breakdown for the upcoming season, including a glimpse into where we find Obi-Wan, Anakin Skywalker, and the rest of our favorites.

“The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”

Disney also released a complete cast, stating: “The series stars Ewan McGregor, reprising his role as the iconic Jedi Master, and also marks the return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader. Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.”

Things are complicated in the trailer, as they always have been in Star Wars. The Empire is fighting against Obi-Wan but they’re also fed lies from Palpatine and more, so who nows how the relationship between Inquisitor Reva and Obi-Wan will play out. We also still haven’t gotten a look at some major players in the series, so a longer trailer might show us some more of Obi-Wan’s allies before the series’ debut on May 25.

I loved seeing the return of Joel Egerton as Uncle Owen, who is clearly being questioned about Obi-Wan and standing his ground. We know that Obi-Wan survives whatever is coming his way. He’s still there in A New Hope, and Luke knows him as “Old Ben Kenobi,” but the question now is “How does this interaction with the Empire play into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s overall story?”

Going back to Tatooine

We’ve spent a lot of time on Tatooine recently, between The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and yet, still, seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi looking out for Luke Skywalker there feels right at home. I feel like a broken record, but getting to go back to Tatooine with Obi-Wan feels like a long time coming, and this is what we’ve been waiting for.

I obviously love The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett, but the minute they announced that we’d be getting Obi-Wan Kenobi, it felt like all these years of asking for a young Obi-Wan Kenobi series was worth the wait. And this teaser just reinforced that feeling.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is heading to Disney+ on May 25, and I am fully prepared to lose my mind over it. It’s what this has all been leading up to.
