“They wanted a new life. Now they just want to live,” we’re told in the trailer for Origin, a new science fiction series that will be shown on YouTube Premium. The show stars Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, and Natalia Tena, who played Nymphadora Tonks, in what seems to be a sci-fi/horror mashup.
Not only are the dynamic Harry Potter alums front and center here, but it seems like there’s some serious production talent behind Origin, including director Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, the Resident Evil movies), creator and writer Mika Watkins, and producers who are old hands at this sort of thing.Â
Origin will drop all of its 10 episodes on November 14th on YouTube’s Premium service. Here’s what we know about the show following its panel at NYCC today:
From the producers of The Crown & producers of Lost comes Origin, a chilling new original series that follows a group of troubled passengers as they wake up on a damaged spaceship abandoned in deep space. Each having left behind a dark past in search of a fresh start on a newly colonized planet, they’re determined to survive at all costs. But as their terrifying situation spirals into paranoia, they come to realize that the greatest threat to their dream of starting over – and indeed their lives – is something far darker than the pasts they were so desperate to escape.
The trailer makes Origin look reminiscent of themes and setups explored in science fiction movies and TV shows since time immemorial, but I always have more time for a new take on the “intergalactic space thriller” genre.
People trying to escape dark pasts via blasting into space to colonize it, only for things to go terribly wrong and some of the passengers are not what they seem? Sign me up. The cast looks refreshingly diverse and the premise exciting, and any show that utilizes a creepy cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” has to be coming from an inspired place.
