The first trailer for Supergirl‘s upcoming season just dropped, giving us a peek at all the exciting new stuff coming up. The show, which is moving to Sundays, has undergone some major changes and casting shakeups. Mon-El and Winn have left National City to join the Legion of Super-Heroes in the future. J’onn Jonzz has stepped down as the director of the DEO, leaving Alex Danvers (and her queer AF haircut—hey girl) in charge. And, as shown in the final moments of season three, there’s a Supergirl doppelganger somewhere in Siberia.
Supergirl’s double, which was created from the aura that left Supergirl during her final battle with Reign, is inspired by the Superman run Red Son. “For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman,” executive producer Robert Rovner said in an interview with TVLine.
Executive producer Jessica Queller elaborated on the story saying, “What happened if—as a baby—Superman landed in Russia and became a hero there instead of in America. It’s an homage to that.”
The trailer also gives us our first look at Nia Nal (Nicole Maines), who will make history as the first transgender superhero on television. The season will follow Nia Nal as she takes on the superhero identity of Dreamer, with guidance from Kara Danvers.
Also joining the series is Sam Witwer (Smallville‘s Doomsday) as Agent Liberty, the founder of Children of Liberty, an anti-alien hate group that opposes alien immigration. I’m excited for this, as Witwer makes a great villain, and Supergirl is at its most powerful when it incorporates real-world politics into the narrative. Fingers crossed that this storyline will bring back Lynda Carter as alien President Marsdin.
We also get a look at Supergirl’s new super suit, an armored catsuit with a face-obscuring helmet that makes her look like a cross between Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s Ghost and that robot from the Lost in Space reboot. Kara’s new suit might be engineered to help her travel through space to the city planet Argo, where her mother lives. It’s also a handy tool to allow Melissa Benoist’s stunt double to get more screentime, which was probably necessary since the actress just finished a run on Broadway in the Carole King musical Beautiful.
