Batwoman Show in the Works, Making Her the Arrowverse’s 6th Queer Lead—Time for Movies to Catch Up

It was already announced that there would be a TV crossover event featuring Batwoman, but now it has been confirmed that a Batwoman series is going to be a full-fledged series on The CW, TVLine has learned.

The show will come out in 2019, and according to press releases, Batwoman a.k.a. Kate Kane will be an out lesbian in the series, as well as a highly trained street fighter.

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

Badass lesbian anti-heroine, sign me up. The series will be written by The Vampire Diaries’ Caroline Dries, who will also serve as an executive producer alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns.

Bringing Kane on board now makes her the 6th main character with The CW/DCTVU who is LGBTQIA+. We have Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow), Mister Terrific (Arrow), Anissa (Black Lightning), Alex (Supergirl) and Captain Cold (Legends of Tomorrow)*.  Having two lead heroines on The CW’s roster, one a lesbian and the other bisexual,  s well as supporting characters who are queen is one of the truly epic things about the Arrowverse. In addition, TV Line is also saying that the show will also be seeking out a lesbian actress to play the role.

Yet this TV progress stands in stark contrast to the hyper-heteronormative world of both the Marvel and DC big-screen Universes. While their smaller screen shows have been more inclusive in pretty much every way, their big-budget blockbusters have been disappointing when it comes to including LGBTQIA+ characters. Canon or otherwise.

Wonder Woman has danced around Diana’s canonical bisexuality, Deadpool plays with Wade being open with his flirting, but is somehow afraid to say the word pansexual. Valkyrie is bisexual on the press tour and Loki is notoriously down for whatever and yet is painfully straight-washed, even though we all know he had his own personal daddy in The Grandmaster.

So yay that we are getting another lesbian superhero on television, but it’s time that they put one on the big screen as well.

*Wentworth Miller considers the character pansexual and Earth X version of the character is gay, so let’s just go with it.
