In a juicy scene that was cut from Black Panther, we have confirmation that Okoye and W’Kabi are indeed married (with children!) and the couple’s differences of mind run deep.
Director Ryan Coogler himself introduces this clip and confirms the couple’s marriage—in the movie, we only see them calling each other “my love,” so the exact status of the relationship was not known until now.
Danai Gurira’s bold, uncompromising Okoye, with her badass moves and unshakable loyalty to T’Challa and Wakanda, has emerged as a fan favorite in the MCU after the events of Black Panther and Infinity War. Shown in a less flattering light is her husband W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya), who begins as T’Challa’s close friend only to briefly ally with Killmonger after T’Challa fails to produce Ulysses Klaue, who was responsible for the death of W’Kabi’s parents. While he eventually chooses the side of our heroes, it’s touch and go there for a while.
W’Kabi is not given as much character development in Black Panther as some of the other characters we’ve come to love, and it’s hard not to wish this scene had made the final cut. Both Kaluuya and Gurira are incredible actors, and this intimate philosophical argument between husband and wife is a powerful scene. It also goes a long way toward explaining W’Kabi’s disappointment and his dreams for the future of Wakanda. And lastly, it shows how much this couple really does care about each other. I can’t wait to see what other scenes didn’t make it into Black Panther, especially if they’re as good as this one.
