Because you do not spend enough time on your phone at present, the Harry Potter-themed Hogwarts Mystery mobile game might ensure that you never put it down.
The game was created by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Wizarding games-focused label, and sports some impressive graphics. It also looks like it’s going to gobble up a fair amount of space on your phone and force you to delete many pictures as a result, making you choose between 1,000 selfies and the chance to finally be the best Slytherin you know you can be.
Set in the Wizarding world after Harry’s birth but prior to his arrival at Hogwarts, the game is meant to give its players the chance to receive their Hogwarts letter, presumably get sorted, “choose your friends,” attend classes with well-known professors like Snape, McGonagall, and Hagrid, and hex the mean kids in magical duels along the way. “This is your Hogwarts story,” the trailer tells us.
According to Nerdist:
The game includes relationship quests and bigger plot arcs, and you can customize your avatar and improve skills throughout. The best part about that avatar customization? You get to pick a pet. I’m so going to get a cat.
Um, owls are where it’s at. Since the game is called Hogwarts Mystery, I’m also going to hazard a guess that there’s a larger puzzle or series of them to solve here—hopefully one that doesn’t involve Dementors, because those things still scare the hell out of me 19 years after the publication of The Prisoner of Azkaban.
I have to say that when I was 15 or so, I would have sold my soul to Voldemort to get my hands on a game like this. It remains to be seen what gameplay is like, since the game won’t be released until the spring, but the interest it has generated shows that there’ll probably be a fair amount of adults playing out of nostalgia and continued Harry Potter love, alongside a younger generation just discovering the magic.
Anyway, I hope there’s the chance to prank the hell out of Snape. Still haven’t gotten that desire out of my system.
