Riverdale Debuts an Ominous Season 2 Trailer (Plus a Blooper Reel)

The Riverdale team unveiled their season 2 trailer at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, accompanied by a blooper reel that makes for one hell of a tone shift. Oh, here’s KJ Apa endearingly stumbling and then here’s Pop saying that the Angel of Death is descending onto Riverdale. We wouldn’t expect anything less from the CW series, which somehow manages to balance obscure references, horror themes, teen drama, and comedy all at the same time.

Warning: Spoilers for season 1 of Riverdale ahead

Season 1 saw the resolution of the murder of Jason Blossom, but it seems like the troubles are just beginning for the residents of the secretive maple syrup town. The ending of season 1 was shocking, with Fred Andrews getting shot in Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe as Archie Andrews watches helplessly. It appears much of the season 2 plot will revolve around the motivations of this attack (much like the Blossom murder plot), seemingly coincidental but heavily implied to be targeted.

Picking up right after the incident, Archie brings his dad’s body asking for help. Jughead, our aspiring dramatic writer narrates, “People will look back at this as the exact moment the last bit of Riverdale’s innocence finally died.” Throughout season 1, it seems like the Andrews family was the most honest and earnest of all the families. Jokes about how the plot would linger on Archie’s challenges with his stage fright and his loving parents while his friends dealt with abuse, lies, and homelessness hit on a difficult part of his character—this “all-American boy” is kind of a weak point of the cast with his naiveté, propensity to manipulation, and righteousness.

However, it seems that by wounding one of the most faultless and good parents of Riverdale and hurting the son, that’s about to change. As Archie sits in his bloodied letterman’s jacket or sits silently knocking a baseball bat against the floor, you can’t help but anticipate some kind of dark and terrifying change. Do we like Dark Archie, or do we want our smiling, sweet boy back?

Also, Cheryl assuring her hospitalized mother that things are going to get better? A sure sign that things will not, in fact, be getting better. The trailer focuses mainly of Archie and his father, but we know there’s going to be a lot more going on in season 2. Hiram Lodge will finally make his trip to Riverdale, Jughead is over on the South Side, and much more will happen over a whopping 22 episodes.

Season 2 premieres October 11th at 8/7c on The CW. Are you looking forward to it?
