We’re at the point where the majority of Americans support the idea of same-sex marriage. (Unfortunately, the minority is then over-represented in public office.) The same goes for Australia, where 72% of the population supports marriage equality, yet same-sex marriages still aren’t recognized. Ben & Jerry’s is taking a stand to protest the unfair, ludicrous restrictions on marriage equality with some unfair, ludicrous restrictions on their ice cream in Australia. It only seems fitting.
Ben & Jerry’s is a longtime active supporter of marriage equality, and their new campaign really highlights the sheer pointlessness of trying to control love. Leading up to the next parliament sitting next month, Aussie scoop shops will have a ban on putting two scoops of the same flavor in one cup or cone. “Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favourite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone,” they wrote on the company’s website. “But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry’s has banned two scoops of the same flavour. You’d be furious!”
“But this doesn’t even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love. So we are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come – make marriage equality legal! Love comes in all flavours!”
Every shop across the country will have postcards and mini-mailboxes for customers to mail their MPs and encourage them to hold a vote on marriage equality. Those that don’t live near a shop (there are only 26 in Australia), can take action through the Equality Campaign’s website.
