Thank You, Fox, for Canceling Sleepy Hollow (And Other Good TV Things This Week)

Recommended Videos

It’s been a rough week in the real world, but things are looking up in the land of television. Some shows were canceled, others renewed and new cast members announced. Here are the bits that made me smile:

FOX is finally putting Sleepy Hollow out of its misery.  While I’m still reeling from the network’s cancellation of the baseball drama Pitch, I am not sorry to see this misguided supernatural series go. Season 4 saw a number of unpleasant changes including relocating to Washington D.C. (it’s called Sleepy Hollow for a reason!) and the untimely departure of star, Nicole Beharie. The show somehow forgot that she was its heart, and her banter with Tom Mison’s Ichabod Crane made for must-see TV. Writers and producers took her for granted, starting in season two when they sidelined her for a convoluted storyline with Crane’s wife, Katrina, and the series never really recovered. Both Beharie and Mison deserve better so good riddance, I say.

ABC’s Black-ish renewed for season 4 and rightfully so. The series starring Anthony Anderson and Tracy Ellis Ross has been essential viewing since its debut, tackling sensitive topics like gun control, police brutality and the election results with pure honesty while still managing to bring the laughs. A spin-off with Yara Shahidi, who plays the couple’s eldest daughter, is headed to Freeform. It will center around her time in college.

Even more renewals! ABC’s Speechless (wholly underrated), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fresh Off the Boat; CW’s The Originals and iZombie; and Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine! Plus, Scandal will end with season 7. Oh yeah, some show called American Gods got a second season. Cool story, bro.

Some great new shows are coming! ABC’s Shakespearean drama Still Star-Crossed from Shondaland looks promising. I’m also stoked about Donald Glover’s Deadpool animated series headed to FXX. FOX’s X-Men series New Mutants announced two of its stars but, sadly, no James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier. Still looking forward to it anyway!

Yep, it was a big week for TV. What has you excited?
