This All Eyez on Me Trailer Begs the Question, “Is That Really Tupac?”

Recommended Videos

Some biopics don’t even bother trying (looking at you, Lifetime Britney movie) while others put forth a scarily accurate effort.  All Eyez on Me falls into the latter if we’re going by its spiffy new trailer.

The movie follows the life and death of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, played by Demetrius Shipp Jr.. It spans his early life in New York as the son of Black Panther activist Afeni Shakur to his rise as one of the most prolific musical artists of all time. This isn’t the first film to spotlight his life but I think it’s the first that will actually get his story right.

With just two and a half minutes to judge from, I’m already impressed by the seemingly perfect casting. There’s no doubt that Shipp Jr. bears a striking resemblance to Shakur, but Jamal Woolard’s Biggie Smalls is also a standout. That’s probably why he was asked to reprise his role here after starring in the 2009 biopic Notorious.

Alongside Shipp Jr. and Woolard, the film stars Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper and Danai Gurira as Tupac’s mother Afeni. All Eyez on Me heads to theaters on June 16.
