StarCraft‘s gameplay has aged considerably better than its graphics over the years, which were simple enough to grace our computer screens back in 1998, when we were still using weird phone witchcraft to call up the Internet. Things have changed a lot since then, and Blizzard is finally changing StarCraft to make use of all our extra computing power.
StarCraft: Remastered is expected to release in the summer and boasts 4k graphics, upgraded audio, and the same original gameplay—the same goes for the Brood War expansion. The upgraded version will also feature modern online functionality, including skill-based matchmaking, friend lists, streaming, and more to replace the outdated Battle.net system still used by players of the original.
The gameplay, on the other hand, will be so identical that producer Pete Stilwell told PC Gamer that replays recorded in the original’s most recent version, which are reproduced from gameplay data rather than actual video files, will still play properly in Remastered. That’s some incredible dedication to detail that’ll be appreciated by longtime fans of the eSports fixture, and you can even kind of see it in the upgraded visuals, which don’t look a whole lot different until they’re blown up to sizes where resolution is really noticeable.
It’s 1998 all over again, but in HD. Time to break out those custom maps with hero units named for anime characters! … Why are you looking at me like that?
