School Days Get Even More Absurd in My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea

Recommended Videos

High school is already a weird and strange time for a lot of people, but My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea takes that a hundred steps further. From the trailer, we can already see a lot of mixed-media violence, disaster, and teenage drama. This film from Dash Shaw (author of Cosplayers, New School, and more) screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and has been praised for its subversive take on the teen movie, humor, and creative animation.

The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Reggie Watts, Maya Rudolph, Lena Dunham, and Susan Sarandon. This film looks like an original feat that I’m very curious about. Here’s the synopsis from GKIDS:

Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship, Dash learns of the administration’s cover-up that puts all the students in danger. As disaster erupts and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school, they are joined by a popular know-it- all (Lena Dunham) and a lunch lady (Susan Sarandon) who is much more than meets the eye, in this wild send-up of disaster cinema, high school comedy and blockbuster satire.

My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea comes to select theaters April 14th. While I understand that some might not be fans of Dunham or Sarandon, the film looks like a visual treat. I’m also excited to see more of Watts, who’s done voice work on Venture Bros. and Maya Rudolph who’s been in films like Big Hero 6. Are you going to check it out?
