Hear Some of Logan‘s Horror-Western Soundtrack

Recommended Videos

Logan director James Mangold has posted a snippet of the movie’s score on Twitter, and it’s intriguingly eerie. Composer Marco Beltrami scored both the Scream franchise and The Hurt Locker, so it’s not surprising that the score features some steadily amplifying thumps and moaning violins. However, at least at the end there, Beltrami seems to be drawing on his 3:10 to Yuma experience and doing some interesting things with Logan‘s vaguely Western aesthetic. That angry clanging is very saloon-piano-gone-bad, and I could personally get really excited about a soundtrack of Western hellscape music.

Plus, when so many superhero movie soundtracks use a similar, sweeping sound, I sort of just want Logan to go for broke on something strange and unique. (Relatedly, Thor: Ragnarok, if you want to go full-on pan flutes and hunting horns, I will be 100% here for that.)

However, like the Rogue One composer before him, Beltrami has very limited time. Up until a few months ago, the composer for Logan was actually Cliff Martinez. Formerly a drummer with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Martinez has scored films like Neon Demon, TrafficDrive and Only God Forgives. Now, I don’t know how much of Martinez’s work will still be used in the film, but either way Beltrami has to move quickly.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, and Patrick Stewart, Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
