Why Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the brilliant team behind TV shows like Fringe and Alias as well as the Kelvin-verse Star Trek movies, decided to reboot the beloved Mummy franchise remains a mystery. We did not ask for this and I’m not even sure we’re going to enjoy it (especially since Brendan Fraser is not involved). Still, the film is well on its way to theaters and we have our first look with a new teaser that doesn’t tell us much of anything.
What we do know is that in place of a love-sick ex-high priest named Imhotep, the main antagonist will be the ancient princess Ahmanet (played by Sofia Boutella, who you might remember from Star Trek Beyond as the tech-savvy alien Jayla). In the short video, she sports double irises, can scream while moving dust around, and according to a terrified Tom Cruise, is “real.” Neat. Cruise will be stepping in for Fraser as a new protagonist Nick Morton because, well, he’s Tom Cruise and no one puts Tommy C. in a corner.
Additional cast members include Courtney B. Vance (who most people today recognize as Johnnie Cochran in The People v. O.J. Simpson while I know him as the preacher in The Preacher’s Wife with Whitney Houston), Russell Crowe (Gladiator and those violent outbursts), Jake Johnson (The New Girl and Jurassic World, apparently [He was really in that?!]), and Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors and the upcoming King Arthur: Legend of the Sword).
While we don’t have that many details on the film other than that it welcomes you to a “new world of gods and monsters,” I have a feeling we’ll get a better idea when the full trailer debuts this Sunday. What are your thoughts on this? Excited? Not interested?
