It’s Official: Steve Rogers is No Longer Captain America in the MCU

Rogers, out.

When we last saw Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, he threw down his shield and walked away from a stunned Tony Stark. Now, it looks like that proverbial mic drop was for real–directors Anthony and Joseph Russo say he’s officially retired from the Captain America title.

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” Joseph told the Huffington Post. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

In the end, he chose Bucky above all, but that doesn’t mean he’s done for good. Chris Evans is set to return to the big screen in Avengers: Infinity War, which starts filming in Atlanta soon. And as Huffington Post pointed out, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely confirmed that the reason he’s still alive is because the Avengers will need him later on.

Perhaps it has something to do with a very big, ornately purple dude by the name of Thanos lurking about. We first saw him in Guardians of the Galaxy and, come Infinity War, will reveal himself as the toughest baddie yet. The Avengers will need all the help they can get and, now that Brie Larson has been cast as Captain Marvel, maybe she’ll pop in for some assistance.

Avengers: Infinity War–Part 1 heads to theaters on May 4, 2018.
