This Is What the GoldenEye 007 Xbox 360 Remaster Looked Like, but We Can’t Have Nice Things

Nintendo and Microsoft, get your act together.

We were all pretty excited about the release of Goldeneye: Source 5.0 recently, but an official remaster of the N64’s seminal FPS would truly be ideal, and fans aren’t the only ones who think so. There was once a remastered, downloadable version of the game planned for Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360, but as you might expect, Nintendo and Microsoft had trouble coming to a legal arrangement to make that possible, and the game never saw (re) release.

That was several years ago now, but lest you forget how bright a timeline we might have lived in, video footage of the remaster in action has now been posted for all the Internet to see. Posted by Rare Thief, the video reveals some upgraded single-player campaign missions (which Source is sadly lacking, though we understand why they focused on the all-important multiplayer) along with the ability to switch between the game’s original look and the remakes updates on-the-fly, which is a nice, nostalgic touch.

It’s a painful 30-minute, 60fps reminder of the legal realities of shifting ownership in entertainment industries, as well as a tantalizing idea of what we could still hold out some hope for. On the other hand, it’s also a reminder that you can check out 2010’s Xbox 360 remake of Perfect Dark, GoldenEye‘s spiritual sequel that is apparently easier to negotiate over—when you’re done watching 1/2 hour of a GoldenEye game you’ll never get to play, that is.
