Shia LaBeouf’s American Honey Trailer Dares You to “Dream Baby Dream”

If we’ve learned anything from both the Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad trailers, it’s that sixty seconds is not a good indication of how well or poorly a film will turn out. Guillermo del Toro’s gothic romance Crimson Peak also suffered from deceptive trailer syndrome, in that it was advertised as a horror flick and audiences were confused when it turned out to be not so much scary as it was just tragically beautiful. American Honey, however, doesn’t appear to fall into that trap.

The preview for the indie flick starring Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough surfaced on the internet and it’s, well, interesting. Even from the bits that we see, it’s pretty clear that this won’t be a plot-heavy film. The story follows a troubled girl (Lane) who runs away from home and gets by selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door in the Midwest. When she runs into Jake (LaBeouf) and his gang, she embraces a new life of hard-partying and young love.

After showing at Cannes, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews. One Variety critic pretty much summed up exactly what we see in the trailer, calling it “part dreamy millennial picaresque, part distorted tapestry of Americana and part exquisitely illustrated iTunes musical.” Call me crazy, but this might be one of the few previews actually advertising what the movie is about. If it were a Britney song, its title would be “What U See (Is What U Get).’

In a time where trailers either give away too much or too little, this is a nice little teaser that provides just enough to get you interested. Goldilocks would approve.
