Ewan McGregor Is Basically ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ About Doing Another Star Wars Movie

I don't think anyone thinks McGregor is desperate for the work--he's established a successful career well aside from the Star Wars franchise. However, that doesn't change the fact that these are his feelings on the subject now, feelings that have every right to be respected, so maybe we should just give it a rest on the Star Wars-related questions for the time being?

Ewan McGregor has made no secret of his desire to potentially do another Star Wars movie in recent years–he’s proposed the idea of doing a follow-up to the prequels which would essentially bridge the gap between his portrayal and that of Sir Alec Guinness in A New Hope and beyond, closing that arc of the Star Wars universe.

Apparently in the year since those original comments were made, however, he’s started to feel a little, ahem, pressured from fans to make it happen–or seems to be under the impression that people believe he’s fishing for more work. When asked by Parade how he feels about the fans who inquire whether or not he’ll make another movie, McGregor had this to say:

I like the films that I made with George Lucas and I’m happy to be part of the legend of it all, but that’s it with me. I don’t really understand the fanaticism about it. I’m asked by everybody all the time, “Would you do another one?” and I’ve said, “Yeah, I’d be happy to,” because I think there’s a film between Episode 3 and Episode 4, which is when Alec Guinness is in the desert. But I’ve been asked about it so much now that I’m being criticized for trying to persuade Disney to make this movie. I only responded to people asking me about it, and now it looks like I’m sort of looking for work, which is humiliating. I couldn’t care less if it happens, but when Star Wars people ask me if I would do it, the answer is yes, so that’s how I feel about it.

Oof. There’s a lot one could address there: namely, McGregor’s choice of phrasing about Star Wars fans, or that he feels like people believe he’s actively campaigning for Disney to make this movie happen. I don’t think anyone thinks McGregor is desperate for the work–he’s established a successful career well aside from the Star Wars franchise. However, that doesn’t change the fact that these are his feelings on the subject now, feelings that have every right to be respected, so maybe we should just give it a rest on the Star Wars-related questions for the time being? It sounds like he’d be more than willing to do another movie if it was asked of him, and that’s probably where we should abandon all further line of questioning unless it becomes a sure thing.
